In my experience, there are three types of contributors:
  1. Developers at the start of their career - trying to build a portfolio
  2. Developers at the end of their career - keeping their hand in
  3. Developers who are paid by their employer to add features, e.g. drivers under Linux or academic projects
Very few if any people are willing to spend hours a week maintaining a product for no pay and no prospects of pay.
Freedom is the freedom to say that two plus two make four. If that is granted, all else follows.
