That may be humour but when in Johannesburg we ordered a tasting plate of bushmeat. bloody awful, I don't know how they managed to cook it to a toughness that would rival a car tyre.

On honeymoon in Iceland, my wife was very hungry one evening. As we perused the menu (in Icelandic) she said "I'm so hungry - I could eat a horse". We'd picked up enough Icelandic words in the week to get the gist of most items, and one seemed tempting. We called the waiter over and asked for a translation of one word... "Horse" came the answer.
We ate salmon that evening.

In another thread I made a comment regarding making popcorn to watch the Win11 rollout, and it occurred to me that the reference may not translate outside of the USA.
In the USA, it's common to eat popcorn while watching movies in the theatre, and often at home as well. The reference "make popcorn" is used when observing humorous and/or otherwise entertaining situations that the folks directly involved may not find so humorous, although often it's a situation of their own making.
Is this reference common outside the USA?

We eat popcorn in Israel while watching movies (both at home and in cinemas), but the equivalent of "making popcorn" never caught on here.

It wasn't, but there is a very common GIF meme[^] that crops up on social media a lot, typically when a major argument is brewing in a thread. Taken to mean "settle down, this is gonna be fun!"

We eat popcorn here in Norway, but I have never heard the expression used in that sense over here.
On the other hand, most Norwegians will know of the comedian Oluf, from North Norway, with a very rough kind of humor, like when he tells "TV? No, there is no TV where we live. If we need entertainment, we throw the cat into the washing machine and watch it through the front glass door when we start the machine ..."

The reference is known but it gets lost in the French translation. But I use it as well on English speaking forums, we French know how to adapt to lower-level cultures *grabs popcorn and sits down*
