I deal with this all the time with documentation and source code comments because I work with a lot of chinese IP. There's a certain method to the madness. Read enough of it and it starts to make sense.

It's probably safe to say they are just using Google Translate rather than an actual interpreter. The former does fairly well on single and double words but not so much on sentences and paragraphs.

I think this is probably their revenge for the crappy translations we do on our stuff for them. I have products translated into French, Italian, German, Spanish, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Polish, and Chinese Simplified. Most of our customers outside the U.S. use the product in English because our translations aren't coherent. We use an outside company for doing localization. Unfortunately the workflow for this process doesn't include having the translators learn (or even see) the product. This means they basically do word and phrase substitution without any context. The end result is humorous in the best case.

I know! When I had to include translated versions, I got our international distributors to translate them: I sent them a (very long) list of all the English screens they could get (this was in the 2 line x 32 character display days) and asked them to translate to the local language. (Along with an apology for not being able to write Persian, Japanese, Australian, ...)
Worked quite well, since they understood the language and the environment the equipment was going to be sold into. Except for one Indian distributor who got quite snotty about the whole idea.

Our one success story in this arena is our Japanese translations. The reason for that is our field service teams in Japan insisted on vetting and editing our language translations. These folks know the product and the customer, and they know the appropriate vocabulary.

Like anyone cares, much less remembers, this was posted before.
Most of us probably weren't even around at that time (certainly not in 2002).
