I have never gone out for Black Friday. I don't do crowds unless absolutely necessary, and with COVID? My normal inclinations have become socially acceptable!
My relatives have been in line at 4AM to get into a store at 5AM ... and even then they were far from the front of the line. Too crazy for me, in every sense of the word "crazy". 
That said, if there is something I actually need or want, I'll look briefly for sales, and if I find something -- order it.

I may take advantage of sales for items on my wishlist or for items I would have bought anyway, otherwise I don't. I'm not fond of buying something because it is discounted: it's still more expensive than not having bought it at all.

I got a deal for a new Makita cordless circular saw from Home Depot, which worked out because I was able to snag an additional two free batteries for my drills that have old batteries that are going. Otherwise, nothing else out there really gets my attention.

An amazing deal isn't a deal, in my book, if you don't need what's being offered.
(Odd no one mentioned "Cyber Monday" which follows, but it's fundamentally the same question.)
A lot like the coupons offered year round to buy specific items. Not very useful if you don't actually use the item.
The last time I recall purchasing a Black Friday item I went to a Walmart whose huge parking lot was all but full by 4:00 AM - and bought an amazing deal: A 1 Megapixel digital camera for only $100 !
But only the experiences describe by many, below, it's not a get-rid-of-slow-stock event (in general) but a madness that is becoming a custom that fulfills itself: you must have such a sale because so many are waiting for it and will shop elsewhere if you don't.
NOW, after the sales comes January, when the real sales begin

I take the expanded version of that to a life-style.
A minimalist - I buy what I need at the level I need it but, when appropriate, with an eye towards the middle and long term, as well.
Most importantly, I don't let other people's opinions on style or anything akin thereto to have any influence on my purchases. A 2012 Mazda 2 with standard transmission, bought new when the 2013's came out - still drives well, doesn't burn much fuel, is easy to park and will probably last well beyond the roughly eight years it has on it. Mrs' car is a whole year newer !
Apparently, the long-term result of this is that should I lose my job due to the pandemic (or just plain being considered a waste of money) I could go on living comfortably without so much as a blink of an eye. Savings and expenses are balanced for years to come; secondary income, while it exists, more than covers our needs and some luxuries.
So - even looking at the advertising - the only gifts I've been buying have been for some birthdays and upcoming holidays - and spending myself into whining and poverty each year has never been on the agenda

I rarely buy anything at Black Friday events as they rarely seem to offer good value (for me in the UK). I can often get better prices on things I want at other normal times of the year.
To a great extent it seems to me that BF is a reason to persuade people to buy at non-discounted 'discount' prices.

...a couple of retailers tried to start it up a few years ago, but mostly as a dumping ground for slow moving stock, and it wasn't a real success.
Certainly, we didn't get the riots the US manages when it opens the doors! And this year? It'd be irresponsible to even try to generate such a furore given the pandemic.
Amazon has a "Black Friday sale", but it lasts at least a week, and pretty much only covers cr@p. No idea if it works for them, but I've never seen anything that was good enough and reduced enough to make me go "buy it now!"

It is multi-select, but if you select "no sales for me" that takes precedence and your other selections are ignored to avoid a contradictory answer

But then how am I supposed to indicate that some years I manage to find something worth buying, and other years it's nothing but scammy fake sales and I keep all my money?
