The point is... no, this is not correct.

Check with the link I used myself in the last or second last message. I am pointing to my own message, but The /Messages/NNNN gives still get a list from messages written by other people.

So I suppose both have used the "get permalink" in the same message. The weird thing is, that link brings you to a list of messages written by different users where some of the messages are even newer as the "permalinked" message (meaning, they were not even written yet, by the time that reported message was posted or reported)

I think this shouldn't happen.

Which opens the right page ID, but with the wrong info:

This is probably because once the message was closed I deleted it from the lounge, so the message finder can't any more!

I thought not even we (Protectors) can delete something at DB level, that only would be "not visible" for the rest.

I have had a lot of "message deleted" corpses that had to be cleaned up with the big Cahoona hammer

I don't think we have any direct access to the DB, but I don't know exactly what the Hamsters do when we tell them to delete: they might move it to an "archive" table, or just mark it as deleted so it doesn't come up in "regular SELECT" operations. Or ... the row might just go in the bit bucket.

But ... if the message number specified doesn't exist in the "active" list, it seem to be returning recent messages instead of a "not found" message.

Nope... the problem is the link, literally.

A permalink usually contains domain/forum/msg=ID

Your Links (both of you) have the link as domain/Messages/id
as it would be the "domain/Members/nickname" Link vs. the "domain/Membership/View.aspx?mid=Number"

If I try the same with my active and visible Thread-OP (meaning: https://www.codeproject.com/Messages/5748913) it happens exactly the same.

it gets to a of recent messages but from the whole site.

So I suppose that the parsing between the "easy" and the "complete" URL-Types is still needing a tiny push to work properly.

What I don't know... where did you get that type of link for the message? I get always the classic type.

I still think it's a closed message problem with pasting: If I copy a message link in the Lounge:

Weird...

Members ID versus Members Name it depends on where I get it. The Who's Who list is nicknames (SAOTD), the preview of the messages or the newsfeed is with nicknames too. But if I click in other places I get the "Membership/ID" type.

But for the messages... every time I click on permalink, no matter where I use it, I get the "long / old" link with messages_ID

I have had to recreate the link type you are using manually.

Might the browser or "local" user settings interfere as well? I am mainly using FF for the last weeks

This is an issue caused by a poor choose of route 13 years ago. How time flies!

For members' lists of messages we use https://www.codeproject.com/Messages/user-name/. For messages we use https://www.codeproject.com/Messages/<message-id>/slug. The message that was linked to had no ASCII slug so its permalink was generated with no slug, meaning the system interpreted the URL as a member message list. However, since "user-name" wasn't a valid username the system then just sent you to the generic "all messages" list page.

So: we fix the permalink generator and it all works again. Talk about a latent bug...

Another weird observation...

- On my company PC I have access to your article.
- Now I'm at home and on my Laptop I have _no_ access to the article.
- But when connecting by RDP to my company PC I still can access the article

Then again...
- At home using Edge and do not login to CP I see the article also on my Laptop

Logged in again on CP from Laptop ate home -> See the article now also on Laptop.

We have had some database issues over the weekend, which have been mitigated. As a result, you may have gotten a 404 when requesting your article. As someone below pointed out, the browser may cache the 404 response, so it may be necessary to clear the your browser cache.

I can see you article fine, and will be having a read later.
