I completely agree, used to use it, but the 'Flower' that controls the PC won't allow it! I have used Adobe Photo thing find Paint.NET better!

I've run into the same thing, except about the superb installer tool Inno Setup[^]. The @#!$!!$ muppets in our IT gestapo decided that since it was freeware it was suspicious and they blocked access to the web site. This despite the fact that I've been using it for all of our product installers for over ten years. When I told them this they threw their hands up in horror, and then fainted dead away when I also told them I hadn't vetted it through the company legal department before using it.

I hope you are not saying you prefer Paint.NET over Photoshop?? I prefer MSPaint over Paint.NET, use GIMP or InkScape instead if you need free. Do they still include the standard Paint in Win10? I only ever found the Paint3D, so I copied the MSPaint.exe across from a 8.1 installation thinking it wasn't included...

This xmas, I have decided to buy myself a Printer so that women in my house feel happy they got extra gifts.
The problem is that I have got like 3 inkjet printers ( range 45 to 70$) in last 4 years. We don't use it often and when we needed to use it, ink was dry or some issues props up.
So when you go to get ink, the cost almost 30$ makes me think , let me just print couple of pages in a shop.
So does laser printer a better option?
Is there pre defined cost to benefit ratio excel sheet of known printers to help me decide?

Question: Would you ever want to print printable CDs or printable DVDs? If so a laserjet is probably not the right choice. I have a Canon MG7720 just for that purpose.

That's the only reason I got my Canon Pixma MX922 for. Otherwise I'm very much committed to laser.
Funny thing, when I asked the lady at Staples if they had inkjet printers that could print on CDs, she assured me they "had nothing that fancy, at least not among the cheap stuff we sell".
Then I found one on the shelves, for less than $120, I think. I made a point of showing her on my way out.

Yup. My 10 plus years old Brother laser is the family workhorse. Inkjets are just for fancy stuff.

That is exactly why I went laser a year ago.
You turn it on, it prints, you turn it off.
It just works, instead of spending an hour winding you up while you try to get all the lines in the print working ... I think I poured more ink through my printers "cleaning the heads" or just binned it because the cartridge was "not recognised" than actually landed where I wanted it to on paper.
But check the toner prices - it isn't cheap, but it does seem to last pretty well and non-OEM toner is available.

So true. It beats the purpose of anytime printing from comfort of home.

I've a Samsung C430W - basic colour with WiFi - but you can get the 480 which includes a scanner (and can be cheaper than the basic one if you shop around).
Be aware that the toner they all come with is a "sample" - it won't do that many prints. Most the second hand / nearly new ones on FleaBay have run out of toner and they don't want to pay for new stuff. I've just ordered my first toner cartridge (Yellow, non OEM, less than £20) as it's down to 20% after a year. But ... that was almost all greetings cards, so loads of images.
Also think about what you want to print - the GSM they take varies, and the higher the number the stiffer the material. Mine takes 200gsm photo glossy card easily from paper bay, which is nice.
You'll also have to chuck out all your inkjet paper, card, labels, etc. - it's got a coating on it which prevents the ink bleeding, but it melts onto the laser fuser and is a PITA to remove.

That's done already. Was so frustrated with inkjets that I disposed the stationery so that I don't tempt myself to spend hours to make printer work again.

When my HP deskjet died I followed some advise from Griff went and bought a Cannon Colour Laser installed it. Get used to print the odd letter, a CV but less so now. I also own a separate Cannon A4 flatbed scanner, I mention this as they try to combine under a common app. On the whole go for a Colour Laser the toner costs a bomb but you don't have to change very often, It has been moaning about the magenta take it out vigorous shake plug it back in, still works!..

I have a Brother laser printer(monochrome).
It's around 10 years old, I have not yet had to change the cartridge.
Laser printers just work when you need them and the ink/powder lasts a long time.

Inkjets are, IMO, not worth their price anymore. They were the only way to get colour in the days when home black-and-White laser printers were expensive, and colour laser printers were unavailable. Today, I would go for a colour laser printer every time.
Advantages:
- The toner cartridge for a laser printer typically lasts for thousands of pages (less for the toner cartridge that comes with the printer)
- The toner doesn't dry out (no ink cartridges wasted)
- The print head doesn't require cleaning (no ink wasted)
Disadvantages:
- Cost. A laser printer is much more expensive than an inkjet.
- The cost of the toner is higher than the cost of inkjet cartridges. This is offset by the number of prints - thousands as opposed to (at best) hundreds.
Others have recommended printers. I have been using he same printer (Brother HL-3040CN) for the last 6-7 years, so I know nothing about later models.

...for varying values of "much". I paid $100 for my HP LaserJet Pro CP1025nw years ago. I've paid, I believe, around $46 for a set of replacement color toner cartridges, which I still haven't used as the original "starter cartridges" still aren't used.

All I can say is that both laser printers and toner are a lot cheaper where you live than they are in Israel.
The cheapest price for an HP LaserJet Pro (the CP1025) in Israel is NIS 780 (~ USD 225).
The cheapest price for a single, original toner cartridge (1 of 4) is NIS 200 (~ USD 57).
(There are cheaper laser printers, but I wanted to compare like with like.)

I have a Fuji Xerox M225 dw laser (a variant model also has fax, ummm, yay? not!).
(I believe there's a Samsung with an almost identical model number that is the same)
only mono, but it's got ADF and of course scanning.
hardware is great, the windows app package - sub par. (using on linux so don't care that much)
I almost went samsung (different model), but: samsung here decided to pass all their consumer printer sales to HP
and I loath the way HP does printers, yes some of their equipment is good, but seems like...
- every time you start the [windows] app,
- every time toner is low (well ink, when on an ink jet which is pretty often)
- every time you put in a new toner/ink
- every holiday or if it rains
- seems sometimes like every week just because
they are trying to ram their ink/toner subscription down your throat.
(sure, cheaper than the overpriced off the shelf shop prices, but...)
I print a dozen pages per year, the wife less... with the kids maybe all up 100 pages a year
... so yeah, I really need that consumables subscription like I need another hole in my head,
so, umm, so I can be stocked and always ready with [many] ink packs that'll be useless when the crap quality printer decides to die.
Final word: any model/brand: don't buy cheapest, (even mid range check non biased reviews)
built in EOL seems to be a very loud rumour these days, yes the evidence is still circumstantial but it's piling up big time - where there's smoke...

Just like several others have said already: I may print a couple pages every month, so two thirds of the ink is spent at cleaning the print head. Not always with any great success, either.
So I am seriously considering switching to a laser. One answer I would like to have: I will be using it as photo printer, for photos that will be framed for the living room wall. They may be hit by direct sunlight for several hours a day. How do laser colors stand up against ink jet colors, in durability?
Have you tried printing out the same photo on your old ink jet before stuffing it away, and on your brand new laser printer, and let the two prints in direct sunlight, side by side, for an entire summer or two?
The ink in the first generations of ink jet printers faded within a few weeks in indoor light; a day or two in sunlight would completely wash them out. That has changed drastically: Professional photo printers of today make copies that can hang in bright light for years. Our office has had the same photos on the wall since before I started in this job ten years ago; they still have no visible trace of fading. One of my colleagues, now retired, is an excellent photographer, and the prints were made on his private Epson printer - he told me that it was a great buy at around 2500 Euro - it can make A1 size prints (60 cm wide paper roll), on canvas, or on sturdy carton. Not what you need for printing out Christmas cards ... But the quality is excellent. Durability is excellent.
I know that I laser printes stop at A3 size - less than I want for wall mounted photos. Laser printers can't print on canvas. If also the colors are less durable, then I am not so sure any more. If I pick up my old photography hobby, I will be printing more regularly. Then I might buy some large Epson printer (but probably not A1 size!) and announce to my hobby photographer friends and colleagues that I can make large-size printouts for them, for the cost of the ink and paper. That will help keeping the print head from drying up.
Until I pick up the old photo hobby again, I am sure that I will be better served by a laser printer.

Unless you want something special, you could go for a laser multifunction...
I got a Brother and I'm super happy with it... I started with this brand after seeing how an HP died after 5 months of use in a company I worked years ago... After that HP they bought a ugly as hell brother... It worked like the HP, but after 5 years of working it stopped working because an internal gear was completely flat (lost all it's teeth).
In that company were so in love with that solid printer that they thought of making the gear themselves in metal to repair the printer... At the end they bought a new one and since that day brother is what I've been using.
I currently have the MFC9430CDW (which is now an old model) but have got no problems with it, can print wirelessly, from LAN and from USB.
Not that expensive and it takes 30 seconds max to be ready to print.
It also can scan multiple pages at once given it has two paper sources available.
Currently my black toner is yelling at me... it's been like this for at least one year and a half... :P
Mine is not used that much, but when I need it it works well.
