and it is only going to get better and cheaper, like TVs and Computers. A lot of companies that manufacture after market parts for repairs will not be happy, but such is life.
I am looking forward to getting my first printer after Christmas; kids come first....evidently  .
I am "finally" getting into Arduino and will use it to manufacture/print circuit board cases and chassis, servo mounts, etc.

I don't have one and I don't know what I'd use one for except maybe to make adapters for some old lenses to more easily use them on my DSLR.

This is a bit like how all woodworking magazines have endless articles about things you can do in your home woodshop to improve it, keep it tidy, etc.
They have so many of those types of articles a casual reader might think if you didn't have that hobby in the first place, you wouldn't need to spend so much time doing that sort of thing...you'd swear that's all people do in their woodshops...very meta. 
So here's a challenge: Design and 3D-print your own 3D printer...

Nope. That needs metal, not plastics: you are talking about very fine control of movement, and any lack of rigidity shows up as nasty defects in the print quality. You could get away with some bits, but you do need precision metalwork for the X, Y, and Z drivers.
As an aside, have a look here: Fixed Gantry CNC Router Build Part 1 - YouTube[^] - it's a "metalworking 3D printer" being built from scratch (by a very talented individual). It should help to explain some of the problems with printing a printer!
