hah, I downloaded everything for the vs2019 offline install
even though it did install from the offline files it refused to start the install unless there was an internet connection.

That's only for the community edition I think.
We installed 2019/MSDN yesterday, and it did not require an internet connection.

I had a good bitch about this when I first downloaded it, not least because it's several thousand files with no indication of how to split them up onto DVDs.

We tried 7-Zip to compress and put them on DVD's but we had problems (probably the cheap media we used). We decided it was probably better to get a thumb drive or cheap 64gb SSD and put the files uncompressed onto it.

That's what we ended up with. We figured it was safer to install from a thumb drive than risk getting 98% of the way through and have the installer fail because it couldn't find a file that was on the first DVD.

You've just struck a nerve with this one.
Traditionally, I've always kept installers on my NAS, ready to go at a moment's notice, so I don't have to take the time to find and download something when I need it. If MS pushed out a service pack or a patch for VS, or a newer ISO, I'd get that and leave it sitting on my NAS.
But starting with VS 2017, downloading the latest of "everything" means periodically downloading a few tens of GBs, and then purging whatever files have been replaced. I've found .zip files to be rather impractical to keep everything together (just way too slow), so I've been maintaining a VHD file, acting as a simple file container, just because I don't like to have tens of thousands of small files on my system. Among other things, it keeps the scanning time to a minimum when my anti-virus decides it needs to do a full-disk scan.

The point of the NAS is to host installer files and not clobber it with anything that's not static. I need to use my VMs, so they don't belong on the NAS.

I am not telling you to use the VM in your NAS.
I am telling you to have a backup of your fully installed (but still clean) VM in your NAS.
At least that's what I do, as it was an backup image of my system parition. From time to time, I copy it back to PC, install updates, and copy back to external drive.
I have a minimalistic installed OS as base VM and a couple more with different constellations of software.

In the atomic age even the tinies are exspected to kno all about komputer science. so much so that ks is now on the carikulum along with more trad. subjekts like fr., maths, algy, geog, hist, lat. ect. ect.
this can come as somthing of a shock for the unprepaired espeshally when some mad master sa "yes boy but is it turin komplete?" or "do you think this algyrythm is enpee 2?" and you hav to admit that you arent rely sure.

turin is in Italy as any fule kno so we can sa something is turin komplete if it kontain spagetti or it rides a moped.

2) enpee kompleteness
something is called enpee komplete if it so tuogh that even grabber caren't sort it - grabber may hav a face like a squished tomato but he kno all about komputers and hav a mycrosoft sertified pro in rafia work.
it also hav something to do with traveling napsak salesmen but i could not sta awake thruough that bit chiz, chiz

big 0 is exsactly how komplicated something is. molesworth 2 sa that plaing fairy bells on the skool piano is big 0 log square to the power of a billion zillion but if that is so why carn't the little tick pla any simpler tune - like one that is only 0 log square to the power of a few like twinkle twinkle little star ect.? he is a 1 trick poney and hav no brane and i am embarased to be realted to him. 0 log squared to the power of a gazilion BOOS to molesworth 2.

It's inspired by four of the finest books ever written (Down With Skool, How to be Topp, Whizz for Atoms! and Back in the Jug Agane by Geoffrey Willans and Ronald Searle).
They're a brilliant satire on British school life in the '50s (and every bit as applicable to the British school I went to in the '80s, to be honest).
Not sure whether they're terribly well known outside the UK but they're much loved here.
