You've just struck a nerve with this one.

Traditionally, I've always kept installers on my NAS, ready to go at a moment's notice, so I don't have to take the time to find and download something when I need it. If MS pushed out a service pack or a patch for VS, or a newer ISO, I'd get that and leave it sitting on my NAS.

But starting with VS 2017, downloading the latest of "everything" means periodically downloading a few tens of GBs, and then purging whatever files have been replaced. I've found .zip files to be rather impractical to keep everything together (just way too slow), so I've been maintaining a VHD file, acting as a simple file container, just because I don't like to have tens of thousands of small files on my system. Among other things, it keeps the scanning time to a minimum when my anti-virus decides it needs to do a full-disk scan.
