The Monkees was the first artificially created "boy band".

This post[^] made me realize - the time to download an ISO around here is usually longer than the interval between power outages (Google it if you don't know what those are).

Hah! You're lucky!
Back in the day we had dial-up, which crashed out if somebody else in the house lifted the phone ... or the wind was blowing ... or the stars were out of alignment.
I bought a copy of Half-Life back then, only to find it was this new-fangled "Steam app" thingy, and it wouldn't run until Steam had updated itself each time (do note that Half-Life was not an online game). Since it took considerably longer than the average "time to die" of dial up to download the steam update - and no, it didn't resume - I never got to play the game at all ...

I had, probably still have somewhere, Half Life as I recall you didn't need to dial up, I didn't have a modem then. It was a bu**** never finished it...

No, you didn't need dial up for H-L, you need it for Steam. And H-L wouldn't run until Steam was up to date ...

If memory serves it had a version of Steam that it was happy with...

It must have. It's been decades, so I might be fuzzy on the details, but I remember installing the game from CD and playing it, without ever having gone online.
That said, I might have downloaded patches from elsewhere, burnt them on CD and brought them home to install from there. But I don't recall Steam being part of the vocabulary back then.

I seem to remember that, A CD nothing more... you wanted a game you went to the shops handed over money and got media! Imagine telling kids in the futre you had Monkey island on 8 5.25 discs, 4 1.44 & 1 CDRom!..
