I was kicked out from the customer because I dared to rewrite a piece of code that had to be shipped and was not working (at all) instead of "fixing it". Which would have been doable if not for the the fact that the code was:
* several functions 300 to 700 lines long;
* not commented in the least;
* the variables had all names as y_cr2, l_in2, l_yi1 and so on and the code was heavily arithmetic;
* the framework it leant upon is incomplete and honestly a large piece of Idontwanttobevulgar.
Luckily I got placed in projects managed internally and ended up working on the Pininfarina new electric hypercar (I'm a petrolhead but 1900hp and 0-60 in under 2 seconds is still amazing) and now I'm working on an exceedingly complex project which happens to be extremely interesting and a huge learning opportunity.

I was kicked out of my first job because...
I had to add a function into a machine originally programmed by another worker of the company. I finish pretty soon and the customer wanted me to have a look into the accuracy of the results. The delta between desired to result was over 10%, after some work I reduced it to 0,3%.
I used 20 hours more than the original project was offered, but customer bought a following project with that 20 hours and 100 more to do the same in all other 3 machines programmed by the same guy.
Other guy I had to help and do the SCADA for him... got pissed off because I detected errors in the variables he was giving me to do the panel. As he didn't helped me I had a look into the program just to find even more errors. He started bitching around and the boss dumped me because I was not good for the working clima 
But...
Thanks that I moved on, I found another job, I met my wife in the new city and now I am in a job earning between 3 and 4 times more what I earned back them.

I totally understand that. It0s not easy and the first days there is always that sense of personal failure that's irrational but hard to deal with. And in my case it was actually me that dropped the sponge first!
I take sunshine from noone and that glorified middle manager ain't special. Still it hurt being cast out. I discovered most of my best colleagues has been cast out from one customer or another so I'm starting to believe it's actually quite natural.
Getting away from that customer netted me 25% more of effective salary so it has been a real win situation for me.

Back in the 80's, I was laid off from Intuit because I wrote a hardware managnment system to help me keep track of the hardware the company was using, beginning with a room stacked floor-to-ceiling with what they called "dead machines". I think it angered/scared one of their lead developers (back then, they were using Turbo Pascal to write TurboTax, and I used Turbo Pascal for my hardware management system).I was laid off the day after I demo'd the software to management (at their request), and was told "we don't think you'll be happy here". I replied, "Based on the way you're handling this, I would probably have to agree."

Thankfully I'm not the only one with the sharp retorts.
Laying someone off because they are doing a good job is unbelievably stupid, but it seems that the World is much much more stupid that what it appears.
My current work environment is definitely not of that kind, luckily.

They all suck. Grids particularly are my current bane. The screen is never wide enough to fit all the crap, scrolling horizontally sucks, etc. etc. etc.
I wish 3D VR was a consumer commodity like flat screens. The 2D look, and trying to jam all this information on a 2D surface (where many of the controls, like grids, are pseudo 2D -- they are really just stacked 1D things) is well past its time and its prime.
An unfortunately, we're not using a grid control that has collapsible sections.
Oh, and did I mention it's a web page? More suckness.

What we need is holographic displays, any size, any resolution and probably 3d. I thought more would be done with Kinect but that seems to have fizzled.

Web page can be any UI you need it to be. The problem is web app designer, not the web technology itself.

I strongly disagree. The underlying technology is the reason creating a good controls for a web app is so difficult. Using a browser for applications was and still is a horrible idea.

Yes, it's hard to make good UI widgets/controls. That's why you don't make the controls yourself but use some UI library/framework to build your web apps. You can use DevExtreme, Kendo UI, webix, Ionic, Sencha ExtJS and many other advanced UI toolkits.
Also, when you are creating Winforms/WPF or any other .Net UI framework apps, you don't usually build your own basic UI widgets, but use built-in stuff plus some 3rd party framework (DevExpress?).
