Actually MFC is not an all or nothing framework - you can pick and choose what you want to use.
Just want to use their collection classes fine, or prefer to roll your own socket classes fine.

Can even mix MFC window UI components and good old fashioned SDK style.

MFC is really just a wrapper around the Windows SDK API
