I installed updates last night on my Linux desktop, and didn't loose any network shares as a result.

I installed updates on my linux desktop [many times] and was never forced to reboot.

I'd rather take the occasional reboot, as opposed to being prompted nearly daily by my Linux VMs for updates.
OTOH, yeah--that Win7 update that breaks network shares is rather inexcusable. The scenario isn't so uncommon this shouldn't have been caught. It's official, nobody at MS these days does any appreciable amount of testing.

Yeah, but I didn't install any updates that caused me problems, it was a customer at work.

FWIW, I uninstalled the patch from the 2 systems that had it, but network connectivity between them wasn't restored.
One of these systems is rather vital to me, so instead of waiting for MS's solution, I ended up migrating all the files under the local admin account (which is affected) to a domain account (which isn't) - this is something I had meant to do for a good while anyway.

Local Dealer told me an oil change was $55
That sounded high to me.
Then I thought, "Oh, this is that New-Fangled super synthetic 0W-20 oil, that must be why it's so expensive."
Then I looked on the shelves of Walmart, and that oil is priced the same as good old 10W-30.
Do I just go to the local oil change place and have them do the regular change ?
Or is there something special about this engine ?

Engine: 4 Cylinder
Mileage: about 19 thousand
Instrument panel says I'm into my last 15 percent of oil life

also charge for topping up other fluids such as brake fluid (20ml at about $5/ml),
draining and refilling the radiator (so they say = just top up with antifreeze so you see "new green color")
rotating the tyres - (often replacing as claim were worn = swapping in the last customers set and a bit of tyre black)
other disposables (the paper floor mats they leave in there for you to prove it happened)
and finally the "tuning" which is plugging in the computer and pressing a one button coz it's all auto
will they ask first? nope... unless it's a high $ job (such as new transmission) - which they will strongly suggest needs doing ASAP.

It's the labour, plus the cost of disposal. And the labour includes the cost of the junior grease monkey who will hopefully take the old oil out first, rent on the garage space, cost of the car lifts, ludicrous price of the machine to reset the "oil change required" light, ... and profit. Lots and lots of profit. Capitalism at its finest!

As far as I know those Hondas need the synthetic oil.
The price should also include the cost of the oil filter and they might also do an engine flush to get all the old oil out.

No sane mechanic will waste his time doing that. A crooked garage might charge you for it though. But nobody being paid to do an oil change will take the time to do that--ever.

It depends on the circumstances, like when the last time an oil change was done, how old the car is, etc.

Sure, maybe if someone's been neglectful to the point where the oil now has more in common with tar than actual oil.
But then, if that's the case, you won't walk away from something like by only spending $55.

Maybe so, but the first one I bought (an '85 Accord) reached a little over 1 light-second on the odometer before I donated it to charity.

0W-20 is just thinner than 10W-30.
Doesn't say anything about quality, it's just a measure of viscosity. While the quality defines the life. (oil or engine)
Anyway, going cheap may get very expensive.
Check which oils to use by the manufacturer.

Anyway, this sounds OK. Filters can be a right pain to get off, give the garage $55, it is a good price, let them get filthy dirty.

Notes from a car guy:
Your car takes 4 quarts of oil (or more precisely, 3.7, but they charge you for four. Then, there's the filter.
The (recommended) oil for your car is a synthetic blend. Valvoline full synth is about $7/quart at wlamart.
Buy a quality filter - I use Motorcraft on my Mustang, but Wix on all my other cars. DO NOT get FRAM oil filters. If you buy the filter yourself and take it to whereever you get your oil changed, they'll install it

What are Your thoughts on the Mobil 1 M1 Oil Filter ?
Interesting; eBay has This...
- "...Genuine Honda / Acura Engine Oil Filter Accord Civic CR-V Pilot OEM 15400PLMA02..."
...for just about the same price; and that's for quantity 1.
Is the genuine Honda part better than the Mobil 1 part ?
eBay couldn't find a match between "Wix" and my Honda.

Their price: $75

My oil costs almost that much (my Mustang uses 9 quarts at $8/quart). I do my own oil changes because everybody's head explodes when I tell them a) how much oil it needs and b) that there are two drain plugs in the oil pan. I also don't trust anyone else to do it right.
