My poor little laptops c drive (119gb) filled up on Wednesday, I did not even realise I had an SSD but it was an early one so very small. Went and bought a 480gb Kingston SSD at the local part store in Cairn and asked them to fit and transfer the c drive. I was quite willing to pay the $150 for a professional to do the job but they wanted the machine for 5 working days - bugger off.
Went to the local one man show computer guy who said it could be done overnight.
Next morning he calls to say he is laid up with a bad back and that his attempt failed. I went around to pick up the machine and a couple of cables to do the transfer on my old desktop.
Downloaded Aoemei (OG gets quite eloquent with it's praises), nice UI seems simple enough so I start the transfer - 3 hours later I supposedly have my c drive transferred to the new disk.
Now for the dreaded part, physically swapping the drives, I hate hardware. As simple as 1 screw and a gentle tug on the drive fitting.
No boot drive Ffaaaaaarrrrkkkkk me!
For the next 6 hours I try rescue disk, Lenovo recovery, Windows 10 troubleshooting. Eventually I get windows to acknowledge there might be something it can work with. I then used the recovery drive I had taken the night before to reset the computer.
Except I now have 8 partitions where I used to have 3, download Aoemei partition manager because windows 10 will not allow you to extend a partition unless the vacant partition is adjacent to the one you want to extend and windows WILL NOT ALLOW YOU TO MOVE A PARTITION. Every other toll does this in their most basic operation.
I am now back to 3 partitions and all the installed software can see the D: partition with all the data on it  I hate working with OS's.

When cloning laptop drives, the failure rate is quite high if the target drive (the new one) is not installed in the laptop:
- Install the blank drive into the laptop
- Put the source disc (the small one from the laptop) into a portable case, and connect it to the laptop
- Boot the laptop with the cloning software's boot disc, and follow the instructions.

Yeah - when I tried it, it was a desktop, and I used the "Upgrade to SSD" feature. Physically added the SSD to the machine, it took half an hour for my 1TB SSD and then removed the HDD. Booted right up.
When I did a lappy, I removed the lappy HDD and connected it and the new SSD to my desktop and cloned from there. Then adjusted the partition size via Partition Assistant to use the bigger drive - 2 minutes I think - and fitted the SSD back in the lappy. Booted straight up and has had no problems at all.

Yah but you are used to tinkering with the nuts and bolts. I am was purely software and development at that - bugger all this configuration stuff.
It turned out the hardware was a no brainer, 1 screw.
BBQ would be nice, next time I am down there... (we have not been to Sydney for years and have no plans to go)

rather u should have just made a bootable iso off the os media using rufus and installed a fresh os on the new ssd...besides there are videos on you tube how to remove the screws and upgrade the hdd to ssd etc...would have been faster...anyway

Clonezilla is free, boots from a live CD, and it transfers pretty much any partition type to a new drive (yes, this includes NTFS/Windows).
Last weekend, I used it to move a Linux boot partition from a SSD to a nVME drive. It took less than 10 minutes (of course, Linux is a lot lighter in terms of required disk space, so YMMV with regards to time required).
BTW, I never partition my OS drive. If I need one or more additional partitions, I add a 2nd drive to the system.

I just came to a realization as I read that: When we had tiny drives, we partitioned the hell out of everything. Now that we have huge drives, nobody bothers. In fact, I'm at a point where the largest drives aren't large enough and I keep wanting to RAID a few together (mirrored, of course) just to get larger-still, single "drives". Best example: Don't give me a drive D: and a drive E: and a drive F:... I want a drive to hold all my movies.
At this rate I'll never have the room to rip my DVDs/blu-rays to disk. Even though I'm buying less and less.

I've had all week to get this done. The wife has been away since Monday and returns in a few hours and has just asked me if I had gotten it done...so now it's down to the wire...literally.
The task at hand...plugging up the lights on the artificial tree that I developed a hernia over last weekend, getting it down from the attic! I dread this since every year I wind up on the floor with a flashlight trying to find those color coded plugs...and then what to do with the plain ones...has the dot rubbed off?...why do I have space for 3 reds and only 2 red ends? Bah!
