The state of Texas has finally posted its requirements for getting Professional Engineer license for Software Engineers.
I'm already a licensed Petroleum Engineer, but thought that adding Software Engineering would be nice, even if not necessary for me.
Here are the exam requirements:[^]

Honestly I'd like to see what an actual test would look like from this specification. Personally I think it's way too comprehensive and unfocused. You've got web development, desktop development, database development, hardware-software interfacing, penetration testing, database design, software architecture, project management styles, etc etc. Things from basically every software discipline that exists.
I feel like all this will accomplish is create yet another test that people buy yet another book they yet again memorize then yet again forget after they get yet another certificate. But maybe I'm just being cynical

The exam is an 8-hour open-book exam. It contains 40 multiple-choice questions in the 4-hour morning session, and 40 multiple-choice questions in the 4-hour afternoon session. Examinee works all questions.
40 multiple choice questions... 8 hours... That's the real test. They will probably have one of those big round government clocks on the wall with the loud ticks for the extra torture.

This appears to be an odd way of testing engineers. Unless answering the multiple-choice questions requires lots of ancillary calculations which are checked by the examiners, I don't see how the exam could take eight hours. If the ancillary calculations are not checked by the examiners, what is to prevent guessing, or just plain cheating?

You can guess answers on multiple choice questions, however they are usually set up in a manner that statistically your ability to pass, based on guessing, is astronomically small.

I had one prof (I think it was Dynamics) whose exams were basically:
Q1: answere some incredibly obscure question. (Or at least it was obscure to me!)
Q2: using the answer from question 1...
Q3: using the answer from question 2...
repeat.
And he was nasty enough to use the wrong answers in the first questions to compute the wrong answers in the next questions. The good thing was I didn't have him the second time I took the course!

Having grown up and went through school in Texas, it sounds par for the course.
At the time there was a state wide test to ensure students had learned the minimum required knowledge to graduate high school, which sounds like a good idea. Unfortunately I remember day after day of being taught how to take a multiple choice test successfully instead of being taught the subject I was actually enrolled in.

Although we have lots of interesting birds over here near the Oostvaardersplassen in the Netherlands, even sea eagles, I was pleasantly surprised today to see one I had not seen before: a Goldfinch in the garden sitting in the top of an apple tree.
He sang a cheerful song, no doubt because of the beautiful weather.
Apparently in the past more people enjoyed this bird, to quote Patrick Kavanagh:

We get goldfinches pretty regularly here. The most common are the ground doves. To bad hunting is illegal in the city, In South America those birds taste really nice. About like quaiil, but can't hunt them here.

In the Netherlands hunting is mostly not allowed, but some species like geese are getting so numerous now that an exception is being made.
Can't mention the word "hunting" to my wife though, I would be beaten with a rolling pin

Hunting here is controlled and klimited to certain seasons. The ground doves are very numerous, but hunting of any kind is not allowed inside the city. So even though free food lands in my backyard, I can't legally catch and cook them.

I understand it doesn't really seem to be your taste, (but you do like wicked drums!) but I have spent the last few days catching up on what the 'Blue Beard' Mike Portnoy has been doing since he left Dream Theater...really good stuff as he has teamed up with the likes of Steve Morse, Dave LaRue, and Neal Morse in a band called 'Flying Paint'. Another project he's in, 'Sons of Apollo' features Billy Sheehan on bass and is pretty heavy.
As for the nice weekend, this happens to be my first official Saturday off (where it hasn't been for travel/special occasions) in over 10 years. I have spent the first half of my day cleaning the pool, edging, cutting wood, and cleaning my shop. Now I wondering what to do with the rest of the day...probably do some backups, code a little, listen to some new tunes.
