A few years ago I went in to my office late in the evening to do some server updates and found one of my female colleagues sitting at her desk working stark naked. So as to appear cool I said "Hi [name redacted], what are you working on?" She screamed and hid under her desk. I then noticed her clothes spread over a table under a ceiling fan with another fan on full power also blowing on them. It turns out she had tripped and fallen into a fountain nearby and thought the office would be a quiet place to come and dry out all her clothes and she could get some coding done while waiting.
I said, "Sorry if I startled you." and then sat at my desk and started work, deliberately having my back to her and positioning myself so she could get to her clothes without being in my line of sight. She went to get her clothes, checked them - still wet - stood for a while and then went back to her desk and continued work. We were like that for about two hours then I said, "I'm going to get a coffee" and went down the corridor to the kitchen area. I got coffee, hung around for a couple of extra minutes, then went back to the office. She was at her desk, fully clothed, working away for a couple more minutes and then got up and left, "Good night!".
The following day she explained what had happened with the fountain and thanked me for my discretion. Sometimes I look back and wish I hadn't been so discrete! Oh well!.

Hi,
I have a MDI project but I wanted to display a window with some info that is not based on my document. I was able to do this and to draw in the window. If I move the window the drawing remains but if I resize it the drawing disappears. I thought the CS_VREDRAW | CS_HREDRAW would take care of this. Also, I don't get the minimize, maximize, close buttons. I'm guessing there are some style conflicts.
Here is the code, it is executed based on a menu selection.

Also, it's MFC. Is MFC even considered programming any more? I'd say it should be allowed here as it's as appropriate as the daily puns and jokes.

Every so often I dive back into MFC code and I really feel like I need to pack some sturdy boots and carabiners. And spare batteries and extra duct tape.
There's a lot of extra crap we used to have to do just to turn the lights on...

Yesterday, I received a text message from a former co-worker asking me to contact him about a data reporting issue. Since the former co-worker is a friend, I agreed to talk to him.
The gist of the issue is: corporate has decided to implement a third-party system and the system either isn't configurable to define the production start time or it will be custom coding to define the production start time. The site has, since its inception in the late 1950's had a production start time of 7:00 AM. A production day runs from 7:00 AM to 7:00 AM.
So.. with the new system, they are missing the production from midnight to 7:00 AM every day.
Had a quick conference call with my friend, his manager and the managers manager... the problem seems to be with some COM+ components on a pair of servers. I walked them through finding the components and they identified them by name. I recognized the names and suggested that the code is probably doing an offset of 7 hours from midnight to get the production start date. Yes, the code base will be in SourceSafe and it shouldn't be a difficult manner to extract it, modify it, recompile and redeploy it.
So.. this code has been running, without issue, since I left... in November 2011.
This isn't the first time I've been called about processes that have been left in place and have run without issue for years.
Could the code have been configured to allow a variable production start date? In retrospect, yes.. but its still a good feeling to know that the code has done what it was designed to do.
