Having many unsaved files is never a good idea. What when a power failure occurs?

Valid point, but keep in mind the typical UPS battery life is around 30 minutes. Your work habits must take into account that a power failure duration can exceed your UPS's battery life, especially at night when you're not around to take appropriate actions.

I have a computer that can run for months on four AA cells from the supermarket. Next year it's going to be 40 years old and worked fine all the time, even with a 256 byte ROM instead of a OS.
I can live with losing everything when the power fails. It was just a collection of source code and data for the operation I planned for this morning. It's not a tragedy when the power is out and everything is lost. It's just an inconvenience.
What really bothers me so much is that Windows went out of its way to create that inconvenience twice. There was no emergency of any kind and asking twice and then doing it anyway when it did not like my response is not acceptable. This could have waited until I go home. Then it would have had the entire weekend to restart the computer as often as it wants. As a bonus, I would not have been held up the entire morning.

Please remind me to tell a surgeon not to let any Windows devices near me if I ever need surgery. Honestly, unless your fan has died and the CPU is going up in flames, nothing is so important that an immediate shutdown is required. Indeed, the CPU would simply swich off (Intel) or burn (AMD) in that case and not wait for the OS to shut down.
Any updates are certainly not so important that they would warrant getting on my nerves like that.

Sounds like you did not setup your device restart policy.
Manage device restarts after updates[^]
If you are on the Home edition of Windows 10 and do not have the group policy editor then you may want to consider upgrading to Pro.

Oh, I'm at work and this is Win 10 Pro, installed over the MSDN subscription. This my boss has to deal with.

By the way, that one photograph of the helicopter was just great. Up to now I had only a drawing, which I compared to the photo. The only info about the drawing was that it was from a Bell 204, which might be a UH-1A, UH-1B, UH-1C, a UH-1E and even some more. The one on the photo must be a UH-1E (because this one was exclusively for the Marines) and the picture nicely shows all kinds of details on the underside which exactly match the drawing.

Sounds like such a great idea!
Screw people who use your software and give them a tad of relief IF they purchase an update that they really didn't need . . . except, of course, to protect themselves from the software!

For the moment it's ok if just the hard disk dies and takes Windows with it. As to making money: No doubt someone else will sooner or later fill the gap if they disappeared. Picking a side in the succession wars to fill a vacant throne could actually be interesting.

Ranting is good for your digestion. Feel better now?
1. As suggested, adjust your restart settings.
2. Run Windows in a VM, turn off network when not needed, if your programming project does not need outside connection. Host connection OK.
3. App control is your friend. Set it to block in your firewall (if you have one) to control hours that updates are allowed. I use application control in my ancient firewall.
I am working on some (very ugly) code for Microsoft's O365 (very ugly) Sharepoint. I can't turn off the network, so I turn to my firewall and block Microsoft Updates (among others) except on weekends, saves bandwidth although that is not critical most of the time.
I see this in the log every few minutes:
Application Control Prevention Alert: APP-UPDATE Microsoft Windows Updates -- HTTP Host windowsupdate.com, SID: 11772, AppID: 2, CatID: 55 10.0.2.237, 50581, X0 x.x.x.x tcp
Seems to work OK.

I feel your pain. The automatic restart issue with winten (regardless of how many items you have open) has impacted me negatively more than once. It's nice that it tries to get you back to where you left off, but it has never been able to put it back 'where I left it'.
It's frustrating enough that I have started just turning the thing off at night to be safe.

This hit me earlier this week, after installing Patch Tuesday update set.
I hit the "later" prompt twice in an evening (within 2 hours or so), then went to bed. Got back in the morning to a rebooted PC...and about 8 important browser windows closed.

I now understand that not being able to get my laptop to update Win10 is a feature, not a bug. Yipee!!

Let me add to your rant. We have noticed on the Surface Book Pro that if you do NOT reboot after updates are downloaded. The machine just cripples itself until it is unusable and REQUIRES a reboot.
Upon rebooting, we see Updates were pending (I believe they are partially installing the updates, and breaking things internally, which catch up to us). But one of the things that just stops working in the printing.
We now reboot a lot more. Which is funny. Windows XP and Windows 7 had kinda fixed that problem for a while.
Windows 10 caused me to buy our first Mac Mini. And while the shell is a lot nicer, it still has some horrendous update cycles... But it has not shut my machine down...
