That's why I run my own services at home (Exchange for email).

You could setup a Google Voice number and forward messages from that to your "real" number. Then close the Google Voice number.

Well, I would say that it is their chalk and their blackboard so they call the shots. They are not the only ones. There are alternatives.
Typically, they want to send you a code via text. I use Google Voice for such things. Easy to turn forwarding on and off, great for screening all phone stuff.

So why is this not required for both of my and both of my kids Microsoft accounts, they are all happy with my ISP email address as the only alternative.
