He is in a position to do now what most people can only do later in life, Bill Gates started his foundation 17 years ago (45-ish y.o ? ).

Yeah but at least Gates etc took on simple tasks that would have a direct effect on saving lives (diseases, food), zuck is trying to build utopia - and while he says it's for everyone looking at it won't be free - really does nothing useful for the less fortunate - I'm sure they want to live in a beautiful connected world as they starve/get thrown into forced labor/child armies.
In short do the stuff that needs fixing first, then make smell nice.

I think you may be missing the original poster's point. Bill Gates made bazillions of dollars, and gave away a lot. That is very different from stating that "my bazillion making company Facebook can make the world a better place".
For every mega-corporation there is clearly a conflict of interest where some decisions make more bazillions and other decisions do more good for the world. Even if an extremely conscientious leader always wants to do the right thing his shareholders may have strongly opposing interests.
As for Mark Zuckerberg, his track record so far does not make this latest selfless philanthropic statement convincing.

I bought a Kindle Fire 7, just a bit over 1 year ago on a Black Friday deal for $34.99.
Can't complain too much at that price.
I mostly used it for reading books in Kindle reader software.
I was very careful to charge it before it became too drained and to not charge it to often.
Now, if I charge it and unplug it before work (7am) and then attempt to look at it again that night (around 7pm) it has about 17% charge left.
Even if it's on Airplane mode it is basically dead by that evening.
Is that all you get out of these batteries & devices? 1 year?
The hardware (except the battery) all seems fine. Seems like it performs well and all.
Again, it was only $35 so I understand 1 year is a long time, but it just feels like a "throw-away philosophy" taking over.
Anyone else have a Kindle Fire 7 for over 1 year? What's your experience?

Depends a little on the exact type of the battery, but essentially that is correct. Lithium polymere batteries, for example, have about 100 good charge cycles. It probably is a battery with only one or two cells and should not be too expensive to replace.
Edit: It's a single cell lithium polymer battery (3.7V, 4400 mAh). Discregarding its extremely flat shape, you could get such a battery for a remote controlled toy for about 5$. But not this thing. We begin at 25$ and can also reach 50$.
