Actually, any time I create some weird tech, like HOPE or FlowSharpCode, I vet the concept by implementing Hunt the Wumpus. I knew Gregory Yob personally, he was very much a mentor/father figure for me when I was 18.

I would sell an arm and a leg to work for Bethesda, Bioware, Eidos/SquareEnix or CD Project RED. But I'd forgo the writing part and concentrate on the extensive beta testing and playtesting.

The first thing I ever wrote was a version of Breakout for my 16k Speccy. Not done any since and highly unlikely to ever do so again - games need to be a a lot more visually sophisticated these days and I'm rubbish at that sort of thing.

Yes, I think my route would have to be lots of little blobs with tool-tips reading along the lines of "Super-shiny spaceship (impressive!)" and "Very realistic-looking extra-terrestrial type with massive teeth (scary!)"
I'm not sure that it would enhance the UX for the general public but at least I'd have some idea of what was going on on-screen.

The first program I ever got paid for was a version of Frogger coded on a 16K Spectrum, and published in Your Computer for the grand sum of £100. I was 14 at the time, and to my tiny mind that was a fortune. Bear in mind, that was 1983-4, where £100 went considerably further than today.

I started work in '83 and I earned about £60 a week, so yes, £100 was a nice little pile in those days - had I realised how much they paid, I'd have submitted mine.
And it would have looked bigger in pound notes, too - I always felt like I had more money when we had those.

Me too. I had 2 games published "in the last millenium" on the Dragon computer. All assembler of course and I guess back then I was pretty happy with them. Compared with the sophistication of some of todays game graphics then they need to stay as history, although it was a lot of fun. As I am really crap at playing computer games I used to have to have special, internal only versions which allowed me to complete them.
