Get a thermostat with a timer setting. Our Budapest flat has four time settings so I can set it differently for morning, daytime, evening and night time. As we're not there, it's just on tick over at the moment though.

Seconded. I own a programmable thermostat that allows me to tailor each day's schedule. I maintain in the upper 60's during the times when the family is home but lowers the temp when we are normally gone or sleeping. It doesn't save a whole lot but the savings add up.

Nah. Just because the individual contributions are small doesn't mean the summation of all contributions is small. $1 is a small amount. Saved 1,000,000 times it becomes a substantial sum, for example.

They are both bad ideas. 1st costs way too much, 2nd gets you cold for a good while (and costs a lot).
My heating system (gas heater linked to the radiators) is set so that it never gets below a certain threshold at any time, and in the hours I wake up and I get back home it's already in the "comfort" temperature for a while.
Also, since radiators store heat for a while even while thhe heater and the pumps are off I broke the eveneing in two "heater on" blocks separated by an hour of heater off - that way the house remains heated by the stored heat in the radiators for two hours more than what I pay for.
The week-end is managed differently, with the heating splitted in more blocks and for more times (as I don't know when and how much I'll be staying at home).

If feasible, dispense with the thermostat altogether - turn if off.
We have a wood burning insert and use that to heat our home; we have the advantage of being able to harvest wood from our property, so it's economical as well.
In the evening, after the fire dies now, the house slowly cools.
This morning, it was 60 degrees F, but the fire is lit and the house will start to warm up.
While its cool, layered clothing.
But, if that isn't an option - decide if you want heat or cool and set one temperature and leave it.

If you are gone all day, then yes, just turn it off. No point having it run when no one is there. If you are only leaving for an hour or 2, probably just leave it as is.
