My heart has joined the thousand, for my friend stopped running today

I met him once, many years ago when I was a student, at the height of his fame from Watership Down - the man was an absolute a***hole!

People who write allegorical stories often are, because they think that everyone is completely stupid for not getting every tiny reference and nuance they added to the story, and they take it as an insult.
The fact that they are the only people in the world who could possibly get the obscured-times-infinity reference or nuance is irrelevant: If you don't get it, you don't get the book, so why are you wasting my time talking to me?

Damn... Sadly, we lose the best of us far too early. The ones that we wish would go, like me, seem to live forever. Go figure... Fare well, Bright Eyes, and thank you for a job well done!
Will Rogers never met me.

What the f*** last I heard she was in stable condition.
So I guess all celebrities over 60 will die before the end of the year?
I mean, this is just getting crazy

They are all getting older. If they have abused drugs/alcohol it is not good for your body (unless you have zombie blood like Keith)

Hey, it's only "entertainers"; they're easily replaceable.
Be thankful it's not family.

I guess you're right. General Tarkin looked pretty real in Rogue One, I'm pretty sure they can do that to Leia too.

They managed pretty well with (rather "without") Brandon Lee and John Candy, and that was before computers got good.
Before too long, they won't need actors at all.
Can you imagine how wonderful that will be? A world without moronic actors dominating the news, and making ridiculous amounts of money for lying?

Do you think they can get that to work with sports too?

|

Just keep ramming the (true) point home to sports fans that spectator sports are no more than entertainment (which is exactly what they are).
I had an avid football fan close to tears over that -- "But... But it's not entertainment... it's... It's Football!"
Might as well be an avid fan of musicals.

I agree that sports are not entertainment

It has been a pretty elephanted up year. Starting with Bowie and several others in between. Sweden also lost many of them in 2016.

I'm hoping next year can't be worse. This year I lost both parents. Others I know had this crazy mortality spree going on.
What worries me is that there's still four days left.

You have my sincere sympathies: I lost my parents many years apart, and that was bad enough. To lose them both in a short time must be horrible.
And yes, there do seem to be more passings than usual: Herself lost her sister at the end of November as well, Alan's cancer finally caught up with him this year, as well as Bowie, Prince, and the rest.
This says it all really.[^]

Thanks - mitigating the closeness of the events was they both being well into their eighties and, by that time; very seriously decaying qualities of life.
The permanence is the only part I can never get used to - no way to fix it - anything which wasn't done cannot be done. In my mind, however, I was quite ready. They were, too.

She was a much better writer than actress, and in "Wishful Drinking" (a book that left me with laughter-induced hypoxia) she offered the typically mordant observation that she knew exactly which photos and film clips would be used by the media to announce her demise.
