Of course, what you say is very true though, low greenhouse gas (water vapour) in the air causes high highs and low lows. All GH gasses do is moderate extremes. Thats why where it is humid, its more constant with a much lower high.
Still, dont tell the AGW scientists this, the basic physics gives them the sh*ts...

So how far inland do you have to go to no longer be classed as 'the beach'? Is there a strict definition?
beach - National Geographic Society[^] says "Beaches can also be barren desert coastlines."

As I'm not a member of the National Geographic Society I needn't abide by their rules, decisions, or opinions.
So - how far? Well - that depends upon where you are at the time.
I live on a barrier island. Those living on "the mainland" consider all of us as living on/by the beach. On the other hand, those of us lining here consider the beach to start at the boardwalk.
However, if one is on the boardwalk, one might decide to go down to the beach (i.e., sandy part).
[What? No elephanting boardwalk on Qatar's beach? Cheapskates!]
In any case - I see a tent near the water-line and people frolicking in a beach-like manner. So - it's clearly a beach.

THe upside was the Devon pub just off the beach....

Not Really - Well, No.
Machine Learning may only use data mining coincidentally. Look up AI, or more specifically, Neural Networks.
Internet of Things - is more than embedded systems; it's embedded systems that also have an connection to the internet - and thus other embedded systems (and hackers).
Although these two are certainly now buzzwords, you description seems well off the mark.

This means I've been working with Internet of things from the 2000's.
It still doesn't justify such a blown out marketing campaigns about IoT.
To me it just feels equivalent to giving a new fancy name like "Visuals of Things" to an embedded system just because you connected it to a display unit.
Adding network connectivity is just like that right? It's just a feature answering a requirement in that product / project. I'd like to ask - Is there any ONE thing that IoT does today, we couldnt have done it with 'Embedded systems' of 1990s?
Almost all devices we developed with embedded OS did connect to the network. Even before the concept of IoT thee were fleet management systems with so many devices synching status in high volumes.
I'm very sure the IoT drumbeats are not worth it. I'm not saying the domain is scope-less. Of course we got a plethora of hardwares & platforms available now. But you could have very well continued with the same old name - "Embedded systems".
In the name of IoT, more things are actually done in the server than on the device!.
I attended a Microsoft Azure IoT event. An year back. They were showing off a lot of advanced features of Azure. (I do love Azure). As they continued to explain about high-volume data ingestion from devices & so on, I stopped and checked with the presenter, what feature in Azure exactly deals with the device? The answer was just The message ingestion system. Which is purely a server feature  . Even there's no separate IoT protocol existed. It was just using HTTP calls. There's nothing on the platform that in specific to an 'IoT' device. What the devices could do with the Azure messaging services, you could still do that from a normal computer connected to the internet. It's just a message processing system. This was an year back.

Do we have to strain this much? It takes so much effort to differentiate the two 'technologies'.
As I said, yes there would be technological updates. But we could have simply called it Data Mining 2.0 & Embedded Systems 2.0, just like how the handful of new updates in Web was called Web 2.0.
Even giving new names to technologies is fine. but making blatant campaigns as if it's a totally new technology looks so childish.
One of the old embedded system companies here in India, have completely re-worded their product /services portfolio just doing a Find & Replace of "Embedded system" & "IoT". Same old products, nothing changed. but they are now an IoT company and beating the drums.
And for the record sake, Micorosoft's own Machine Learning expert (I forgot his name) Shouted it loud enough saying not to get fussed with 'Machine Learning', as it's just the same old Data mining in new skin. Of course there's some flavors & layers added. He was pointing to Azure ML.

I'm taking my partner for her 50th birthday to Rome tomorrow. We'll be there till next Tuesday for a few days sightseeing. It's my first trip to Italy so really looking forward to it. Hoping to visit the Vatican, Colosseum and Trevi Fountain to name a few things we want to see.
