Does anyone here have any experience of living and working in Finland? I'm in the running for a contract based out of Helsinki up there, and I'm curious as to what it might be like. I live in Zurich right now, so not doing too bad quality of life wise. Just wondering if Finland might be worth a shot for a year or two. I love cold weather, by the way.

Vodka being the commonly used medicine against being introvert.
Sauna is done in the nude, as it should be. Vodka quite often aswell.

BTW, don't get me wrong, I find that the Finns are generally awesome people, despite their common claim that all Swedes are homosexuals.
Which makes the memory of seven naked finnish guys from Helsinkis technical University, standing or rather half dancing on a jetty outside the sauna arms around each others shoulders singing a song on that theme, rather fun.

As an aborigine my opinions are obviously biased, but Jörgen is definitely right. We tend to be introvert and in general people don't do small talk. For example if things are going well at work, you notice it because of the silence surrounding you. But if things are going bad you probably know about it since it's going to be told straight to you. As far as I can see it's a good thing since we mean what we say and we keep what we promise.
As in all Nordic countries the summer is short, but beautiful. You might find especially the autumn and the beginning of the winter very cold in Helsinki area since, as long as the water is open, the outside temperature feels roughly 10 degrees less than it actually is. Immediately after ice is formed on the coast, the air dries and doesn't feel so cold anymore.
One awkward thing may be the amount of daylight during the year. For many people it's too much on the summertime when the sun hardly sets, even in southern Finland, and at winter time the day is short, I mean really short. When you go to work, it's dark, when you leave the office, it's dark.
I know a lot of people who have survived Finland so as far as I can see it's doable. It may take some time to get to know the people and to get used to some of our (probably weird) habits but then again you most likely also gain new life long friends.
So why not take the risk, you might even like it
Oh by the way, you hopefully like coffee!

You're right, Tango among other dances is very popular and the Tango in Finland is usually much more melancholic. At summertime we have lots of open-air dances which are really popular. What comes to the music in overall, I guess the same melancholy can be seen how for example symphonic or melodic metal is popular here. Take for example Nightwish[^] or Sonata Arctica[^]

My office was recently moved from the Massachusetts tech hub at Kendall Square, Cambridge to Boston Financial District. Surprisingly, the office space is nowadays cheaper here 
So, here we are among the people in suites suits. When we enter an elevator they stare at us, unsure whether we are working for some kind of delivery service or are homeless people who somehow tricked the security and got in. We are struggling not to laugh when looking at their ties and shiny shoes.
