More than half of it, as you may have guessed is taxes. The state and local govt's (Chicago) uses it as a cash cow under the pretense of that money paying for healthcare costs incurred by smokers, which is BS IMHO.

When dad was dying of cancer (not smoking related) with one to seven months to live, they kept telling him to quit smoking. He did not quit and enjoyed smoking until the end.

My dad smoked for many years but he quit when us kids came along. He hasn't smoked since but he often quips that if he is ever diagnosed with a terminal illness he is going to start back up. It has become my opinion that smokers never really quit smoking, they just stop smoking.

I don't smoke cigarettes, but I do smoke a pipe. Funny thing is that I end up attracting attention rather than repelling it, because the tobacco I smoke smells like cookies or brownies baking.
I don't regret it; I rather enjoy it. I don't plan on quitting either, mainly due to the fact it's something I do enjoy and I refuse to allow society to dictate what I can and can not do as long as I'm not hurting anyone else. I don't smoke around others unless they are smokers themselves.
I'm all about freedom of choice. Live and let live. If I want to smoke, it's my business as long as I don't invade others' space with it.
I realize that it is bad for your health, but the way I see it, I have as good a chance of getting cancer from the preservatives in the food, fluoridation in the tap water, or the pesticides in the water, ground and air. I've had family members die of cancer that have never smoked, drank alcohol, and kept a healthy life style.
Should I break into song? "And I did it my waaaaaaaayyyyyyy....." 
When you are dead, you won't even know that you are dead. It's a pain only felt by others.
Same thing when you are stupid.

When I was a smoker I certainly didn't regret starting, I enjoyed smoking, I was thoroughly addicted. I do regret giving them up, I may be healthier and I don't stink of smoke anymore but I'm not happier.

I gave up over 20 years ago - have not missed it at all but I don't recall regretting being a smoker when I was one.

Different answer... I am the youngest of 4 boys, everyone smoked except me!
I hated the second hand smoke.
When I was 13, my 18 y/o brother grabs me and says "You don't smoke now. I am going
into the Navy. If you are smoking when I get out. I will KILL YOU! Don't be stupid,
you have a future!" (then he threw me back into the wall, and left)
Probably the sweetest thing he ever said to me! 
So, I have never smoked. I puffed a couple of times, inhaled ONCE and turned green.
But I used his threat to ward off offers. Pretty soon EVERYONE knew not to offer it to me.
Fast Forward. My other brother died of cancer a few years ago. My mom, a heavy smoker, died last year yesterday, and my father has cancer in his lungs and will probably die of it in the next 18-24 months. (he gave up smoking 10 years ago, but the damage was done over 50 years of smoking)
My other brother gave it up when he had kids, and is thankful he did.
My oldest brother still smokes. He lives at home with dad still, and can't afford much.
He wishes someone warned him to not start! Oh, he doesn't want to give it up because he is
afraid he will get fat like the rest of us.
I realize that a full 4 of 6 of us will die from cancer (almost double the 30% average).
I find it a stinky habit. My brothers say I am WORSE than an ex-smoker. LOL.

Honestly, I expected this to be the norm, but from the small dataset here on CP, it appears most smokers don't care that they are smoking.

Probably so in many cases. Smoking is like any other habit, good or bad. We do it for pleasure and escape from stress. Many drink coffee for the same reasons. The reason smoking gets so much attention is that it's not self contained. The smoke invades the space of those around the smoker resulting in the attention and makes the smoker an easy target for others.
Smoking does cause cancer, fact. Smoking causes emphysema, fact, but if health reasons are the concern, consider this. Many other things we take into our bodies cause cancer. Bottled water contains a leach-ate from the plastic bottles (bromine), which is a carcinogen. Pesticides are found in our food and drinking water. Pollutants in the air from engine exhaust and the electromagnetic energy (microwaves) from our cell phones enter our bodies everyday. The Zika virus is now big news and local governments in the States have begun spraying pesticides in our neighborhoods to kill the mosquitoes. More and more people are treated for all types of cancer and other diseases related to these types of conditions.
With that said, I will stick to my earlier post and just say, I enjoy it and have no plans to quit anytime soon.

I never regretted starting smoking, I always enjoyed it, and it wasnt expensive (I smoked hand rolled).
What I did was get bored with it, the constant monkey on the back urging you to have another, it was a big relief to get rid of that.
Now I smoke on occasion, say someones wedding, or a party, and I will happily smoke a packet because it goes so well with alcohol, and then not smoke for months.
That way its my choice, its me in control.

It's not unknown for me to get rather intense in my postings, whether Lounge or Soapbox. It's also rare for people, most of the time, and certainly while arguing, to turn around and say "wait - I see that you're right". But the debates, whether fierce or friendly, are the start of transmitting information. Some logical, some emotional, and in the analysis, all relevant in understanding (if not agreeing) with the opposition.
Following the debates, keyboards sweaty with exertion, I'd find it well to to go off with the opposition for some beers - and say "good game", but better beer.
It's a philosophy - no doubt embraced by many at CP.
Just venting, sort of, as the political season both at home and abroad gets unusually oppositional, that if we survive this round, we're here for the long haul.
