The first commercial program I wrote was in VB6 way back in 1999 and initially ran on Windows 98, and it continues to run flawlessly even today in Windows 10.

Nearly every time I left-click my mouse, the computer thinks I clicked twice.
As an example; I click the X to close a browser tab and two tabs close. 
I suspect it's my IOGEAR KVM's fault; I may need to replace it.

It's probably a dirty or worn microswitch - open it up, read the number off the switch and order one from FleaBay, RS or Farnell. It's pretty easy to replace one if you have basic soldering skills - a minute or two is all for three pins - and it's a lot more socially responsible in terms of "repair, reuse, recycle" than binning it.
For my Logitech Trackman, the switches are D2FC-F-7N but read the existing as not all need the push contact in the same place. Last time I did it - several years ago - I got two switches for under a pound, instead of the 50 quid or so they wanted for a new unit.

Maybe you're just getting old? I've noticed that old people double-click rather than single-click.

Some old people find very difficult to do double click. They simply do two single click.

I actually need to remove my hand from the mouse at times to keep from accidental clicks.

I had a similar issue for about 2 or 3 weeks - it drove me crazy. It affected my browser windows as well as my file manipulation(open, save, copy, cut, paste, etc.) Anyhow, it just went away one day. Don't know if it was a windows update somewhere or what, but I could not fix it on my own.

I had one that suddenly decided to rotate itself by 90 degrees, so if I moved it up it went right, etc.
It's still in a box, somewhere. I'm hoping to sell it for a fortune -- after all, people pay crazy money for defective postage stamps, don't they?

My laptop's power brick just completely failed. No more power comes from it, and my new one won't be here until Friday.

It depends on the laptop and which way the battery is. You have to tip it so the terminal are at the bottom, so all the power can drain out!

Some laptops work with the cell removed too (but do not forget to connect the cord  )...

What I was suggesting, that maybe the cell should be removed to test to be sure that it is the brick...
The other solution may be the store next (10 min driving) to my home...It cost about $35 with a variety of connectors for (almost) every laptop with the right voltage...So if you just post me the correct voltage (a picture of the cell is probably the better) I can be back in half an hour with a new brick
