I have a (very very) simple UPS that's just for my 2 NAS boxes.
Hard drives tend to not like it when the power just cuts out.
The UPS last about half an hour to an hour, so plenty of time to do a proper shutdown, I'v had need for it twice I think in the 7 years I have it.
Other than that if my pc hard drive breaks I'll just replace it, there is never (ever) anything on my pc I can't lose.
Everything that I want to save goes straight to one of the NAS boxes.

My UPS is the laptop battery, but a lot of the customers we work with can have flaky power and either don't have UPS's, or they haven't been tested and don't work. But you can be damn sure that there are working UPS's on their slot machines.

Go to Control Panel Administrative tools and set the Windows Update Service to disabled.
That should stop the madness.

It did my early win 10 Preview build. Now No key. not test system.
It may depend on what it was updating at the time too.

The only time it happened to me the (Windows 10) update just picked up where it left off when the power was restored.

... And that pops up every four frugging minutes!
Technical details:
- OS: winio version PoC (there is no other version) 64bit
- Hardware: Octacore tablet; the specs don't matter, but it's got tons of everything
Error details:
- A fruggin' cryptic message every four minutes, which wakes the machine up, so that the insane battery-hog that is winio can kill the battery even after I've put it to sleep, and which causes me to input key-presses into places where I don't want to input key-presses (thereby losing them from where I wanted to input them)!
Error symptoms:
- Hey, did you even read the bit about the ridiculous messages?
Activities on error:
- Click the frugging cryptic message, and it opens the "MANAGE OPTIONAL FEATURES" (yes, it shouts) window, which displays a list of languages installed on the machine -- all of which are from MS. Does this tell me anything? Does it ****!
Dear people who were and/or are (incredibly) inferior to Mr. Gates: Please tell me how to turn this frugging annoying "feature" off!

Boy? OK, I'm not entirely sure that fits unless you're a shaky old fart.
Funny thing is that there are some ratbags who make fun of and insult people querying in Q/A and other programming help forums as well.
Sure, a number of people querying don't know all "how to's" of posting a question, but I'm seeing more insulting replies than actual answers to questions like that. Sometimes I wonder if these people offer any real help at all.
So, the line gets blurred and I'm often not sure as to what the hell is going on in here these days. It used to be better than this though.

Samsung just announced a 4TB SSD for $1500 USD. Now I have to replace all the drives in my 16TB array  (Don't I wish I had $6000 sitting around doing nothing)

Yeah, but think of the requirements:
In order to maintain 2.5 inch sizing, you would need platters as thin as parchment; a breakthrough in magnetic domain management/read/write; a really fast head assembly, etc.
SSDs are the coming thing, and I have a box of 2 - 4 TB 2.5 and 5.25 inch mechanical hard drives I may be able to move at $30 each

Most desktop hard drives are still 3.5", you're thinking laptop hard drives or SSDs. I'm not suggesting spinning drives must match the physical dimensions of SSDs.
Besides, most drive bays are still 5.25" wide. I'm all for bringing back the old drive format if this is what's needed to increase capacity. Or use two hard drive bays, just like some video cards can occupy 2 PCI slots.
