I agree about how the older ones seemed to last the life a a PC. The problem is not so much the data density/speed/etc., but rather the source of manufacture and the attitude.

It turns out that, with the reduced cost of manufacturing in China, doing QC at the user end is cheaper than the real thing. If the drive dies - give them a new one! Look at how many drives (from any manufacturer) are DOA, or join the legions of the dead within a few weeks. As for your data? Not their problem, is it?

My philosophical outlook (and why I don't by > 1TB drives) is: An unreliable Hard Drive is overpriced at "Free"
