Well, Peter asked for a recipe (but hasn't got it yet), and to be honest, all the talk of Shepherd's Pie has made me quite hungry as well.
I know that Griff and the rest try to be helpful by providing nice tips etc, but when you're not used to making a dish, you need to start out using a specific recipe (I do at least)
If I google Shepherd's Pie, I know that I will find a million different recipes. But I don't want to waste my time on a recipe in the hope that it IS actually a good recipe.
So if anybody (UK'an?) has a recipe that is tested and has proven to be "the best damn Shepherd's Pie in the history of Shepherd's Pies", I would really love to get my greasy little fingers on it!

I hope you find one - I cook a lot, so recipes are 'guidelines' - I'll switch out x/y/z and replace with whatever-I-have, so no two dishes produced from a 'recipe' are the same

So do I, I just need some place to start...
And anyway, with foreign recipes, I almost always need to be creative when it comes to ingredients that aren't readily available in Sweden and obscure measurements that don't translate to any quantity known to Man... 
But if I try to make British Shepherd's Pie here in Sweden, I would prefer to try to get it as close to the original as possible. Otherwise, what's the point?

mmm, shepherds pie with reindeer instead of lamb ? I'm in !!! (I had smoked reindeer meat and reindeer pate when I was in Stockholm visiting/being a tourist a few years ago)

Reindeer is SO GOOD! And it wouldn't actually be a bad idea to put it in a Shepherd's Pie. However, I don't have any reindeer in the freezer right now. I do, however have minced deer meat (and lots of it), and that would probably do fine as well.

Here's a recipe from a NZ book (oft given to kids as a rite of passage when they leave home, so Im sure any Kiwi's will know it) .. its very basic - I sometimes use Worcester Sauce, Tomato paste, various herbs and have been known to 'hide vegetables' in it by starting with a trio of finely diced carrot, leek (instead of onion, my mother doesnt tolerate onion well) and celery as they just use onion here .. you'll have to look at what others have said and start your own family tradition
1 tablespoon oil
1 onion, chopped
500g mince (?originally minced/chopped leftover roast lamb)
2 tablespoons flour
1 tablespoon tomato sauce
1 tablespoon chutney or relish
3/4 cup beef stock
3 potatoes, chopped
1 tablespoon butter
1 tablespoon finely chopped onion
1/2 cup grated tasty cheese
salt
pepper to taste
Heat oil in a large frying pan.
Add onion and cook until clear.
Add mince and cook until well browned, stirring constantly.
Pour off excess fat
Stir in flour and cook for 1 minute
Add tomato sauce, chutney and stock
Bring to the boil, reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes
Set Aside
Cook potatoes in boiling, salted water until tender
Drain and heat for a few minutes to dry off excess moisture, shaking the pan frequently
Mash potato
Add butter, onion, and half the cheese, mixing until smooth and creamy (I usually add some cream/milk)
Season with salt and pepper to taste
Put mince into a ‘pie dish’ (I usually use a glass ‘loaf pan’)
Top with potato mixture
Sprinkle with remaining cheese
Bake at 190 degrees C for 20 minutes until golden and heated through

It's quite common for white cats and yes, it has to do with the genes. I've got another white cat as well (also with odd eyes) but she can hear (well, at least what she wants to hear  )

Not that often from what I hear. I bought some kangaroo meat a long time ago and tried to get a good recipe here in the lounge where I know there are quite a few Aussies. Never got any. They just said that it wasn't that common, but once in a while it was eaten with orange sauce.
Seems like that recipe is just as non-existant as the Shepherd's pie one....

these days one of our most common supermarkets sells it (so you dont need to know a farmer with a gun) .. you can get steaks, sausages (known as 'kanga bangas', but thats Australian specific 'lingo'/language, bangers == sausages) - never heard of it with orange sauce, it would stand up to a fruity spicy maybe plum or cumquat sauce

Never tried reindeer, but it would have to go some to beat ostrich - also far too good for a Shepherd's Pie.

I've never seen a recipe for it. My grandmother, mother, friends' mothers, and two wives just cook it in whatever way their mothers used to. Lamb mince, tinned tomatoes, curry powder - cook until it's done. Put into an ovenproof dish, top with mashed potato and bake until ready (20 minutes or so). Enjoy.

It's mince (lamb for Shepherd's, beef for Cottage) and tatties. Any and all other ingredients optional. You think Mrs Shepherd had time for recipes and watching Nigella?

Seriously. all you need for the base is lamb, a quarter as much root vegetable of your choice, onion, salt, pepper (black and white), and water.
For the top, potatoes, salt, white pepper, butter (for putting on the top, after you've forked it), and water to boil the spuds in.
The more complicated you make it, the less it's like shepherd's pie.
