I had something similar happen to me once. Had a recruiter contact me for what looked to be a great job. Went through two rounds of interviews with the team leader and then a VP, only to have them back out saying that the position didn't materialize. I assumed I had messed up the interview somehow and went on with my life. About 5 months later I saw the position pop up on some job boards so I applied. A brief interview with the VP I had seen 5 months earlier and they immediately sent me an offer.
It turns out that the VP was neighbors with my old boss at the time. He didn't realize it until the second interview and didn't want to "poach" me from his neighbor. When I had applied (instead of them trying to recruit me) it was all he needed to tell his neighbor "sorry but he approached us".

I have just had a new machine built, which included an SSD, into which I transferred the HDs from my old machine. Everything is working fine, sort of. I was just going to migrate my C: drive over to the SSD using an AOMEI program but this "sort of" is putting me off.
If I start to install a new system + apps onto the SSD as and when I have time while I still use my old C: drive to run the machine, am I heading for trouble?

First, take a backup. (AOMEI Backupper standard is excellent, and yes, I know, I know, I keep saying that!)
Then just use the AOMEI Partition magic SSD Upgrade wizard. It works, it transferred mine very, very nicely!
You can just install fresh onto the SSD, that'll work as well. But if your old system has everything you need...why bother? All you will end up doing is finding an app you forgot to install or swearing because you can't remember how to get all the settings just the way they were! 
If anything messes up you can always unplug the SSD, plug in the old HDD and it'll still boot exactly as it is now. (Though you may need to faff with BIOS settings).

Why would I need a backup? Isn't the old C: drive the backup until I decide everything is OK with the SSD version; at which point, I could reformat the C: drive and change its drive letter. Although I suppose I should back it up while I do the transfer.
I take your point about the possibility the app settings are not the same. That always gets me when I have to reinstall something.
I'm still worried about the funnies that keep happening. For instance, I have a WINDOWS/System32/cmd.exe that occasionally fires up but nothing happens when it runs. I can't find out how it is being started.
On balance, I will probably do the transfer and then try and repair any problems.

If you really just transferred the HDDs from a different machine, it's probably being fired up by drivers who are saying "Sh1t! I can't work with this hardware! I'd better reinstall myself, because it must be my fault!"

I haven't noticed anything out of the ordinary when using the new machine and I'm on it for most of the daylight hours. This is one more reason why a re-install might be a good idea.
Being an .exe, and a big one at that, I can't think what created it.
