I had been thinking about subscribing to a paid VPN service, since NetFlix blocks me viewing a lot of their content when I come in through a proxy, like the free Hola; so, after some research thought I'd try NordVpn.

I went to their site and initiated a chat to discuss whether their service worked with NetFlix, and was impressed by how knowledgeable the support rep was; he quickly fielded my questions about my Firewall and AV software in-browser and out-browser. Gave me a list of US servers he said worked with NetFlix.

He offered me a free three-day trial (no credit-card info required. Downloading and installing their server-selector/manager software for Windows was a piece of cake. My initial attempt to select on of the servers on the can-fly-with NetFlix list somehow resulted in my connecting to the wrong server, so could not view content I wanted to see. Went back Nord's site, started another chat session, and got the same rep; who diagnosed the problem as my not setting the default server correctly. One browser shut-down, one cache-cleaning, and one server selection later: voila, I'm watching a NetFlix movie I wanted to see, but could not view before.

I must say I was impressed by the whole experience; this type of install-that-requires-configuration, and remote diagnosis of internet connections can be complex, frustrating.

Yep, I'm going to become a paying customer, and, no, Nord did not in any way encourage me to write this, or offer me any inducement to write this Smile | :) Whether this VPN, or any other, is right for you I don't have a clue.

It's just nice to talk about software that "just works" once in a while !

Now ... DropBox ... MSDN's documentation ... data-binding in Winforms ... .NET's implementation of BitVector32 ... don't get me started.

cheers, Bill
«There is a spectrum, from "clearly desirable behaviour," to "possibly dodgy behavior that still makes some sense," to "clearly undesirable behavior." We try to make the latter into warnings or, better, errors. But stuff that is in the middle category you don’t want to restrict unless there is a clear way to work around it.» Eric Lippert, May 14, 2008
