I see that from ExplainXKCD - but it doesn't seem to work for me (Chrome Version 49.0.2623.110 m 64-bit) - the lights just vanish after twenty minutes or so...

That's a pretty accurate sim of my gardening abilities.

I can't say why lights vanished for you (I have the same Chrome and they still there after more than 2 hours)...
however I can explain why it works soooooooooooooo slooooooooooooooooooooowly...
In Chrome, when the tab not in focus, the minimum time interval for repeated tasks is 1 second...So events (like animations) are totally disables util back to focus...So actually most JavaScript related functionality is on hold while you are not in focus...
Skipper: We'll fix it.
Alex: Fix it? How you gonna fix this?
Skipper: Grit, spit and a whole lotta duct tape.

There's something not 100% correct in the application.
You should get some empty ground and a light, with the option to add 2 additional lights.
you can turn the lights, change the beam and change it color. Pick something and wait. A garden should start to appear after a while.
This thing posts back to the server once in a while, so possibly the load was too heavy this morning to run the application correctly. Running Chrome 49.0 and at first it didn't work at all, but later I tried again and now I'm happily growing (creating) a garden. The garden differs from session to session (notice the GUID in the url)
good luck.

It's like Taylor Swift's music videos, they are completely ok with the sound off. The script for Catwoman is just awful. There are plenty of other good movies with good looking women.

The Best Little Cathouse in Texas?
If you have an important point to make, don't try to be subtle or clever. Use a pile driver. Hit the point once. Then come back and hit it again. Then hit it a third time - a tremendous whack.
