I develop .NET with SQL Server back-ends 
I want some Linux to try something else for a change and to mess around with some tools like Docker, Jenkins, what have you, without messing up my working machine.
I'm currently at Mint, but I get some issues with screen resolutions...

I remember when I did it... the installation and config was not bad, it went well.... the problem was when I start using it... dude, totally lost, and the applications and easy stuff I used to do in Win, were totally a mess. In my case I installed a fresh version in a separated Hard Disk, so no boot issues at all, I just chose what HDD want to start from the Bios Boot sequence, that allowed no intrusion from Win into Linux, or Linux on Win (I could remove anyone without problems)
Then even if it was a more stable, OS, my final user experience was so bad, that I toke me some minutes to understand that no one in my home or office would be able to use it, they will not be able to find the apps or do their work. You can compare it to today's Windows Phone vs (Android or Iphone) even when Windows Phone requires less Hardware and resources, is faster, you can call it Better, people doesn't like it cause they don't know how to use it, even when you teach them how to use, they will not like it cause the rest of the world is not using it!!!

Windows Phone is my favorite actually! Very easy to use. To bad it's missing the apps 
I had more trouble getting used to Android.

Agree, as Android had growth to become a more complex OS, it now suffer from the issues of bigger OS: more memory, more processor, too much default background process, less battery life, and developers are like we got a lot of memory, who cares!!!....
I got one Lumia 625 for free, and I was like WTF how can this phone do all this with just 512MB!!! now got my hands in a lumia 1520 and I'm like what a beast!!! I wanted it to try to develop some Apps, and now I'm using it as my main phone, it's quicker, easier and faster, only current issues is Whatsapp not being able to save pictures in a different folder, dude everything is spaming in the photos app, but everything else is awesome, got all the apps I was using for real in my old Note 2. (now my Note 2 is taking vacations, it's safely stored in my home desk)

Something eerily similar happened to me on Tuesday. I've been running Ubuntu in VMware for several months for development in Qt targeting a small device.
After accepting available updates, I agreed to "restart now." It failed to boot. A more Linux-knowledgeable colleague got it working again for me. He backed out the kernel update, which in my case was linux-image-3.19.0.51-generic.

Until I realised my motherboard only supports SATA 2.
A quick power-down, cable swap, and BIOS change, and I'm twice as fast! You can notice it when VS loads.
6Gb/sec. That's fairly rapid, really...

Hi All,
I have as regulars may know, I have a task to develop some ATE equipment and processes for a company. I have found the relevant circuit board bit more fiddling have got the board working(!) just need a relevant project file so I can write the GUI in C#, lot of searching I have found a VB.Net project (regulars Griff will know of my love for VB.NET) so I am wondering if there is a converter for projects rather than bits of code like Convert VB.NET to C# - A free code conversion tool - developer Fusion[^] I have used extensively! Really the only thing the DLL for talking to board will not appear as a COM Port.

Why convert the project? Keep it as a VB assembly, and reference it in the C# UI.
Why reinvent the wheel, if all you are doing is probably introducing problems?

Is the syntax of VB really so appalling that you refuse to work with it? I find that funny as it simply uses the alphabet which we read every day.
Other than the syntax it's .NET, so the same as C# (possibly with Option Strict set to Off, which is bad).
Automatically converting it won't make the code any better (but probably worse), you'll just have bad code that's written slightly different.
I'm so tired of this C# vs. VB.NET debate.
It's the same framework with (mostly ) the same options.
Do you really feel so much better because you write C# instead of VB?
Personally I've seen code in both C# and VB that makes you want to spoon your eyes out.

I'm not really bashing VB.Net (it is just the Syntax that is different), only really due to me not really being a basic programmer, I'm a hardware guy really I feel happier with C (or assembly!) as I can look at it and see quicker why it's not working where as with Basic I always have to read the code carefully, I was really only happy with basic at school on a BBC Master (to date me!). Really it is just speed with this this is 'pretty is nice, ugly works' time is critical!

Why the DLL should appear as COM port? For this you need to write a .inf file to "install" your vid/pid as a cdc device and assign a COM port.

believe me I know all about PID/VIDs and CDC device...we are old foes. I was just that this board didn't do that. It uses some Native means of sitting on the USB tree, as a HID compliant device rather than a CDC, hence my question about converting the project.

Well written and designed VB is fine so you may be pleasantly surprised when looking at the code.
I think it is just that because VB has become synonymous with bad coding that it common amongst us to assume that VB is a bad choice.
It's the same framework, Griff's suggestion of converting it to a DLL is a good one - I have done this myself and in my C# projects I use some code that was previously written in VB as converting it to C# would risk introducing errors.

Sanity has returned I have managed to find the DLL I think it uses and now it looks alot easier than I though! note to self 'when you can see trouble in the distance don't immediately yell for help, you might not need as much as you think!'
