Uncle Bob has become the latest well-known developer to speak out against sexism in our industry, particularly when it crosses the line and becomes physical - Clean Coder Blog[^].
Its staggering this even needs to be said. Well done to him and others for speaking out.

Great article. One thing I took from it was that just because you don't notice it doesn't mean it's not a problem. It could be in the business you are in or at your own very workplace.
I've got a hard time taking this in thou. I can't see myself being quite while being subjected to it and I'd like to think I would be vocal about it if I ever was a witness.

Not physical though, here is something which a senior manager (who will remain unnamed) would do:
- He would go around the office, and stop by to talk for more than 20 minutes, at cubes of lady employees. Persons like me were not even glanced at, by him
Obviously, all 'Management Awards' went to them, while our role was just to applaud.
This is another aspect, which is also not addressed much.

Twenty years ago my wife worked with such a pig at a well-known software company as a language translator and was often subject to his harassment. Thankfully, it was nothing physical, all verbal and innuendo. I was so angry about it and wanted her to talk to her supervisors and I wanted to do something about it myself. But she would not do anything and would not let me do anything. She and I were both young and naive. Today, she would not stand for it and today I would ignore her pleas to leave it alone.

Yes, I remember similar things at an old software house I used to work at. I was younger, and less certain of myself to complain. If I witnessed such behaviour now I would talk to the woman involved and offer to act as witness if she wanted to take it further.
It is up to all of us to make it known such behaviour is reprehensible and will not stand.

I, like Uncle Bob and others replying, have not ever witnessed such behavior. If I ever did see such a thing I know for certain I would not tolerate it (I'm not one to be quiet when I see something f*d up), but how can I do anything about it if it never comes to my attention?
I also wonder sometimes about whether this is a general "industry" problem, or more of a "Silicon Valley" problem. Nearly every time I read an article about sexism in our industry, including Uncle Bob's, the anecdotes refer to something happening in Silicon Valley (or a company that touts itself as a Silicon Valley-like startup). [Note: I'm not saying sexual harassment never happens outside of Silicon Valley, I'm only questioning whether it is a widespread issue outside of there].

I've never seen anything either. At the same time, if the scum bags aren't being blatant a lot of the physical stuff's not easy for an outside observer to notice. ex in the middle of a crowd, a bump-grope is probably going concealed from everyone else's awareness unless our eyes are in the wrong place.
