Despite the EU's slippery grasp on reality not everything Google does is for profit (shouldn't really have to point that out when the whole thing is predicated on cost free services to users but ...). They already have servers dispersed across the world to provide localised services and back-up for each other. Why not use them to provide a little extra service too? It certainly makes more sense than having a small number constantly over-subscribed surely?

Premise;
People who use proxy's are evil.
Google is evil.
Google has open proxies to spy on evil people. When they come out of the proxy tunnel their http accesses and traffic are recorded and for sale to various organizations (insert "organization" here that may be interested). What GoogleAd and GoogleAnalytics hooked scripts don't grab the google proxy does.

Now here I am doing the morning download of emails and get the gem below.
I was pretty sure the net had evolved past the scams of yester-year but I got this:

Really? I get at least 3 of these a week! Plus dozens of gorgeous Russian girls whose soulmate I am, competitions I've won, messages I've missed and bank accounts that I must protect from fraudsters. There is a little less scam spam around than in the golden years but it hasn't changed much. Why fix it if it ain't broken?
