Storing anything confidential (medical records, financial data, intellectual property etc.) on a machine that you do not control is, IMO, a sucker's bet. Given that (a) I perform proper backups, (b) the improbability of my being anyone's specific target, and (c) the certainty that Google, Microsoft etc. are targets, I prefer to take the small chance of my house being destroyed to the possibility of someone hacking my personal data.
Non-confidential but irreplaceable data (e.g. genealogical information, old photographs, etc.) have been copied, and are stored off-site.

then I prefer renting, the hot potato goes to the provider, who also can make economy of scale thus reducing costs. Legal problems can be redirected to someone else.
If the machine is for internal use I prefer buying - it will have a value until it definitively dies. Our deparment own internal private (i.e. VERY outside the eyes of the management) is ages old and served almost all the roles for a machine in software developement company. Seriously, we care for it as an elder coworker or a mascot  .

The computer I'm using for development is a home build monster (from independently ordered parts), and I run it for years (4-7) and replace it with a new monster (I spend around $5000 on the box, which is like 6-8 time of the cost of an average, pre-built box). I'm not always replacing the screens, but replacing the mouse/keyboard more frequently...
For the computers I use for finished products that I'm responsible to run and maintain (I'm talking about web applications/services) I hire some online space depending on the size and other needs of the application...

From the original post, I thought that it was a brick & mortar store. The only online hardware I've bought has been from NewEgg, IMHO they are awesome. I've been to the aforementioned, and their stores are good, Fry's having the better selection and prices. TD is very clean, and BB nearly so.

These days if I have a server, unless it's a dev server, I like renting it off-site and let someone else deal with it. This way I can just go to the beach or do anything else besides deal with it all the time.

Not only do I refuse to rent, nor to rely on anything "cloudy," I don't like pay-as-you-go services, either. I buy the parts from reputable suppliers, build the hardware, purchase the software, and install it as needed. I was just starting to get used to the idea of using Adobe products - sometimes - when they stopped selling and started renting the stuff. That's the end for me and Adobe.

Totally agree, I build my own and buy software, I won't rent or whatever they call it. I bought CS6 and if they don't offer another CS in say 5 years I'll go somewhere else, bought fed up with them.

It comes down to singular personal use vs having something like a web server having to serve mass amount of users. It is not only about the amount of users that one has to serve but also the fact that these cloud companies provide a security service and has measures in place that ensures that the site stays online 24-7.
All that said, the future is ever changing and who knows what it has in store for us. I can think of one area which renting hardware can already be exploited with personal use (if it does not already happen), namely 3d animation.
