Totally agree, I build my own and buy software, I won't rent or whatever they call it. I bought CS6 and if they don't offer another CS in say 5 years I'll go somewhere else, bought fed up with them.

It comes down to singular personal use vs having something like a web server having to serve mass amount of users. It is not only about the amount of users that one has to serve but also the fact that these cloud companies provide a security service and has measures in place that ensures that the site stays online 24-7.
All that said, the future is ever changing and who knows what it has in store for us. I can think of one area which renting hardware can already be exploited with personal use (if it does not already happen), namely 3d animation.

Sounds like my stash: Either a new bare-bones system or recertified.
To an extent, I feel more secure with the previously-owned and recertifed stuff: if something was going to go bad it already has.
