It depends on the culture of where you are, and I don't mean the country, but the organisation or audience you are talking to.

Some women will get insulted if you call them girls, females sounds very awkward to me (partly because of an excellent sitcom called Friday Night Dinner in which the father asks his son if there are any females in his life), some women do not like the word women because they see it as 'of men'.

It also depends on how formal the situation you are in.

I think it also needs to fit what you call the men.

Men and women.
Ladies and gentlemen.
Lads and lasses.
Boys and girls.
Vicars and tarts.
Bros and hos.
Some men are born mediocre, some men achieve mediocrity, and some men have mediocrity thrust upon them.
