Anybody got any ideas about what might be wrong with a smoke alarm that keeps emitting a single 'chirp' at random intervals (sometimes a few seconds, other times a few minutes, then not for a hour or or two) driving me and the dog potty when not scaring one or the other of us half to death? It's hard wired to the mains so short of taking a brick to it and giving it a damned good thrashing (a plan of action becoming increasingly likely!) there's no way to disable it so fixes would be most welcome!

They typically start doing that when either:
a. The battery is going bad (even if the unit is connected to mains power)
2. The unit itself is going bad

Smoke alarms have a small amount of radioactive material (Am-241) and they are designed to last about ten years. (CO detectors only last about 5 years and the only way to stop the damn things bleeping is to cut a wire!) When they start to die, it's quite possible that they "bleep" randomly in the same way that battery operated ones do when the battery is dying.
If you've had it for a while, I'd replace it to be on the safe side. They aren't expensive, but the lack of them certainly can be!

There're actually two types of smoke detector sensors. One uses a sensor that monitors alpha particle absorption, the second type uses a photo-diode instead. The difference is that one is faster to detect non-smokey fires, the other the smokey sort (but prone to false alarms due to steam). In the US you'll generally see them marketed as kitchen or bedroom models. Higher end models will include both types of sensors and often thermal and CO sensors and combine data from all of the sensors to reduce the risk of a false alarm.

Even hardwired, there's usually a connector. If not, just snip one of the leads.

Just in case anyone is interested, I've finally been released from hospitals and therapyafter my stroke. We bought a house just north of Austin and moved in and I've gone back to UT to finish up. My dissertation is written and reviewed by my supervisors, so all I haveeft is my defense and I'll be done. I've also applied for admission to the MS TC program[^], so that'll keep me entertained a while longer.
I've decided that having a stroke is like going over Niagara Falls in a barrel: It's better to say you did and not actually do it! It's been one hell of a journey the past 11 months.
Aftr the stroke, I fell and broke a rib, so back to thr hospitl again. There's no greater pain than a broken rib, I think.

I'm feeling OK. Just very frustrated that I can't do all the things I used to enjoy,.I still have no use of my left arm and hand.and not enough stamina to walk for more than a few minutes; with a cane.But on the bright side, I can still see the green side of the grass, and I do check each motrning. Accordinfg to statistics after having a stroke and laying on the floor for 2 days, 90% chance I should be dead!It did make me get all my affairs in order. I wasn't ready to go before, but if my time comes now, I'm Ok with that. It is tough coming face-to-face with ones own mortality.

Yeah I had intensive hospital therapy for 2 months, then went to an assisted living place for 3 months of intensive 8 hrs/day therapy, then back to another hospital fr 2 months of therapy and now I have outpatient therapy3 times a week.I'm still not back to full speed, but every day is a little better.

Yes, I had 2 months of therapy in a hospital, then 3 months in patient at an assisted living place, then back to a hos[ppital for another month. I had the stroke on Oct 20, 2014 and finally went home on May 15, 2015. and back to school on Aug 6, 2015.
it pretty nearly took a year of my life away, but I survived so I can still give the world hell

tHANKS! btw, i JUST MADE ESERVATIONS FOR A WINTER BREAK VACATION TO bOLIVIA. mY WIFE IS bOLIVIAN AND THIS IS PARTLY A SCOUTING TRIP TO SEE IF WE CAN RETIRE THERE NEXT YEAR.wE ALREADY OWN A CONDO SO HOUSING IS NO ADDITIONAL COST. iN THEORY WE SHOULD BE ABLE TO LIVE QUITE WELL ON MY RETIREMENT.

I've had a broken rib, and as far as I'm concerned, having a tooth taken out with faulty anesthesia is worse, a lot worse.
