I would say if you are copying raw code, then yes, you need to understand it.
Libraries on the other hand are something I do not fully study in depth before I use. Learn the interface and I'm away. Purist could argue that you should fully understand the inner working of all code in your system, but who has the time to do this in a commercial environment?
BTW - big fan of commit strip, hit's the nail on the head with surprising consistency.

It was a rude shock to me, about 2005, when I first encountered a developer who quite openly defended downloading raw code and pasting it into his app without understanding it.
And it was sort code he copied - to sort a list to go into a .Net combo box!
He claimed it "saved time" - why should he have to write his own sort code all the time?
Of course, it also saved him the time of doing even the most cursory research into one of the most basic .Net controls (you know, the combo box with the .Sorted property on it and stuff).
Unfortunately, through sheer bad luck, it kept crashing, and made him with waste time explaining himself to the boring old fart running the project.

Got my presents a while ago from the kids, think they have done pretty good.
I got this T-Shirt[^], a bottle of Bundy 33 OP[^] (the Bundaberg Rum site doesn't have this, faarrrkkkkers), this[^] and this[^] on Blu-Ray.
Into the beers, Bundy OP to come and currently have the vegetables baking in the oven, steaks on the stove and the lamb leg steaks, bacon and sausages to come.

I've gotten rather addicted to the series.[^] Unfortunately, Netflix only has the first 3 seasons. "If-Then-Else" (season 4) is supposed to be awesome.

That is a good series and I was disappointed that netflix only had the 3 seasons.
Jim Caviezel is excellent in this roll, I really liked him in "Play it forward" where he played an addict.
