Other than sounding extremely geeky, what does it stand for? Somewhere along the line, I must have forgotten.

So what does the F & S stand for?

It was the only thing I could think off but apart from Ma I couldn't figure the rest out

Mothers singular MA ("singular" to get rid of the "S" I needed to make it work as a sentence)
direction R (For "Right")
contains IN (To make you think something was to be inside something else)
the Queen's ERS (Elizabeth II Regina of the United Kingdom: ER)
sailors

How about "Single moms ..." would that have been a good enough hint? As in being alone and only one.
Cheers!

I don't get Queer's -> ERS translation.
It would have to be ER's and then the clue would have to end in sailor's.
I thought I've read somewhere that case has to match also. Can't remember where though!

I don't think ER would be happy about it either!

Sorry about that, it's Queen's of course!
Still, wouldn't CCC rules mandate you use the genitive then?
Cheers!

You probably haven't seen, but others may well have, and I am sure Pompey will be one, and this should give him an excellent place to comment on last night, the news of Paolo Wanchope, manager of Costa Rica Under 23's football team, having a fight with someone at the end of a game the other day and then resigning.
He made his name playing for Derby County under Jim Smith (The Bald Eagle) around twenty years ago. In the dressing room after a game Wanchope had a punch up with Smith after Smith called him a prima donna. Wanchope thought that the term was questioning his sexuality.
Most of that makes very little sense to me and I wrote it, good luck to anyone trying to read it.

Mothers singular MA ("singular" to get rid of the "S" I needed to make it work as a sentence)
Except you didn't cos you missed out the essential possessive apostrophe! Such shenanigans weren't even necessary. "Mother's direction" in crosswordese can mean "Mother has" with the 'has' serving merely as a linking word.
direction R (For "Right")
Right isn't a direction, it's a side! N, E, W, S etc. are directions because they're constants; right, left, starboard, port etc. are sides because they depend entirely upon alignment.
contains IN (To make you think something was to be inside something else)
That makes no sense at all! There is no world in which IN and CONTAINS are even remotely synonymous! CONTAINED maybe but definitely not CONTAINS!
Like your solver I leapt to the answer in a few seconds but I'm afraid it was entirely in spite of rather than because of the clue! Just saying!

What about the case of Queen's?
Wouldn't it have to be ER's then?
Cheers!

No. By convention, crossword answers are assumed to be in the form which they are written into the grid, ie. in capitals and without punctuation.

So you can't "Go right", or "Head right" then?

Yes you can but only relative to your present position. If someone asks you what direction Sheffield is in you don't say 'right' (at least I hope you don't)!

No ... really ... it's not!!!

Well I had only partial answer
Mother = MA
Direction = R
Contains = IN
But the MARINERS fit the solution, so I jumped the gun as I had to go to a meeting.

Please explain it, as I can't get it except
Mothers = Ma.
Is it something like this:
singular direction = RI
contains the Queen's sailors = NERS
As we know the answer already we can take it the way we want
|
|

Queen's I should imagine is the ERS bit.
Mariners is the sailors.
Mothers singular = MA
Direction = RIN for some reason I don't understand.
