The only BASICs I've been forced to use were GDBASIC on HP Minicomputers and HPBASIC on HP 9845 desktop computers. HPBASIC was rather advanced, but GDBASIC was garbage created for in house use at General Dynamics.

I really liked GQ Basic. I wrote some really cool apps back then.

I never saw GQ Basic, happily. My career nearly ended abruptly, in fact, when I was tasked with porting a bunch of old test programs from GDBASIC on a HP 21Mx minicomputer to a shiny new HP 9825 desktop computer running a modern language called hpl. After wading through GOTOs, chained segments and subroutines that were numbered rather than named, and attempting to interpret hard coded constants in equations over a span of months, I complained to my boss about the crappy programming and suggested that we hunt down and shoot the moron who wrote the stuff. He got really quiet, and kinda embarrassed looking, and said, "I wrote that stuff."
Oops.

None of them are essential for participation with the site, but they can help to improve it for everybody.
The impractical use is that you can cash your points in for real money, provided you have the highest reputation, and you don't live in Wales. And don't mind the exchange rate, which is only available for conversation to the Triganic Pu.

As Griff pointed out, a lot of it has to do with permissions to vote articles up/down, etc.
Personnaly, I come here to help people, get help, and troll the lounge. The whole notion of "reputation" translate into "what do people think of me", and is really an artificially inflated sense of self worth that has no real bearing on your skills or abilities.
If it's not broken, fix it until it is
