I was around 8 at the time and the machine was a ZX Spectrum +[^]. One year later, and due to my instant fascination for the thing, my mother bought me what came to be my first computer and where I wrote my first lines of code: Timex 2048[^]. I'd only worked on dumb terminals, as PCs were still on the way. I was doing a secretarial course and heard other students talking about making an circle move across the screen. You could TELL computers what to do?!! I was fascinated. Swapped out my "Business Documentation" module for the programming module, about a day's worth of QBasic, and was hooked. Later I did a programming course and met the love of my life, C.
