Hi all,
I've been assigned the task of obtaining a number of handheld units.
The idea is to write a some database app on them to facillitate mobile data collection.
Then at the end of every day they upload (either by docking/wireless/phone) to a central server.
Anybody any input to help me.
At the moment I don't even know what platform to choose!
Sounds like a common task - are there any good solutions out there already?
Any advice welcome before I take the plunge.

That sounds like a very common request. And, really, most mobile platforms will fit the bill you need. My experience with the Pocket PC allows me to tell you that it does support a very interesting number of databases and connectivity methods. You can use Access, SQL Server, Oracle and many other db engines. As for connectivity, you have a full spectrum of access methods, Bluetooth-enabled GPRS, Wi-Fi, cradle, the works.
So, it is an excellent choice.

Thanks for your feedback... I think I'm going to go the Pocket PC route, just wanted to check nobody had hit any real headaches!
Anybody know any durable units in the field?

It depends on the application type, but you can rely on HP and Symbol.

Well the handhelds will be used on the wards in a hospital for a new trial we're doing.
I've fallen out with HP at the moment because of their appauling OfficeJet drivers and support so they'd be my last resort!  I guess it couldn't hurt to look at their stuff though!

How can I deploy my emvc++ project on a Pocket PC not just copy the corresponding files, what i need full installation application. ??

Well, if you are asking about how to create an install package, you really need to read about it in the online help file. Go to the following topics: Microsoft Windows CE / Installation and Configuration Guide / Installing Applications. This will teach you how to produce a CAB file with your deployment. Then, you can do one of two things: copy the CAB file to your device and execute it, or use the CeAppMgr.exe residing in your desktop to do this work. The online help file has one example of the scripting you need.

Hello,
I need to develop an application wich will plot real-time points on a chart (a point every 10 msec more or less !!). I don't have really the time to developp a complete graphic library so my question is: does anybody knows a good one or a powerfull chart display so I don't have to start from scratch  ??

I knew that we use Unicode on PocketPC. But when I type a Vietnamese text, it can't be shown correctly in screen. Why ? I think it's not problem when I use a Vietnamese text with Unicode, but it seems not like that

I want to use both English and Vietnamese in my eVC program. When I choose an option "Using Vietnamese", every dialog and text that appear then in Vietnamese. And the same to English.
What is the best solution ?

Great, I now have a Java-enabled phone, a Nokia 3410, and being a geek, I would like to program it - but how?? 
Could someone point me in the right direction for tutorials, SDKs etc? Thanks a lot, because a quick Google search provided nothing I though useful.

The CStdIoFile class is available for use, but none of the functions in it are supported. How f***in' absurd is that?

You're right! Sometimes I have the feeling that MFC 3.0 for CE is really a half-baked and, in some points, a poorly implemented library. This kind of things just makes me wonder how fast the MFC team had to adapt the library for CE. Way too fast.

I am running Windows CE.
I want to trigger a function every 30 minutes. I understand that this can be done by using timers. But a timer object needs DispatchMessage() function for TimerProc() to get called.
Is it possible to provide a message loop in a windowless DLL? If yes, where should the message loop be defined?
(I tried providing a message loop in the DLL but the DLL started showing strange behavior. Is it at all possible?)
Windows ce does not support Timer Queues or Waitable timers. Is there any other option?
Any suggestions would be highly appreciated.

Another option would be to use a thread. Worker threads do not need a message loop and you can control their timing with equal (if not greater) accuracy. The code would look something like this:
BOOL bLoop = TRUE;
while(bLoop)
{
Sleep(30*60*1000);
}
Please note that this code might not be the best for battery saving purposes.

I am leaning more towards not adding a background thread mainly becz I already have three threads in my module. So, I am thinking of modifying one of the threads that I have to wait for RETRANSMIT_TIME, do the job and again wait.

Hi Guys,
Not sure if this is the correct message board for this issue, but here I go anyway:
I'm attempting (unsuccessfully) to Sync my Compaq IPAQ 3835 to my desktop (DELL GX260) at work. After installing ActiveSync 3.5, I am instructed to "Get Connected", ie make a connection from my Pocket PC to my Desktop PC. The problem is that this connection always fails. The PC doesn't recognize my device, so a connection can't be created.
Does anyone have any trouble shooting tips for me?
Any help would be appreciated

Missing info:
1-What is your desktop OS and version?
2-What connection method (serial, USB, Bluetooth, IR)?
To try: ActiveSync 3.6 - download it from Microsoft web site.

Check if there is another application accessing (or trying to access) the COM port you are using. Check for modem drivers, for example. ActiveSync will not work through the COM port if it is already opened.

Joao,
I don't have a modem running on this compu. Also, when the connection to the PocketPC fails, a pop-up shows that my port (COM1) is available.
Are there other ways I can check my Port availability?

 I'm not sure... NT 4.0 is remote history for me.
Try connecting to COM2. Also check for other software that might be hooked into your COM1 (it can be anything...)
