And I just turned 36. Started dev when I was 14, so yeah I'm getting up there. I unfortunately remember things like VBDOS that never should be remember.

I don't see the problem? The rules are plain - the income needs to be at a certain level deemed to be high enough to support the family without relying on handouts - theirs isn't.

I have some sympathy for their plight (my daughter-in-law is from George, RSA), but the rules are fairly clear. And one has to ask why he is not working. My daughter-in-law came here 16 years ago and has never been without a job.

If their combined income is below a certain level then they are automatically entitled to benefits, even if he has never paid any tax here. That's the situation these new laws are trying to correct.
