It's not about winning! The poster LOSES if nobody gets it; they need to be tricky but not impossible!
I'd prefer 'if there is no correct solution, the poster loses and the previous, answered poster gets to post again.
Posts that are not answered after 24 hours are deemed silly, and should be flagged as abusive.
That'll keep 'em honest!

Not sure "abuse" is a good idea - it would be too easy for someone clever to get banned that way - and it's only a game anyway.
Perhaps "previous answered poster" is a better solution. Comments, anyone?

Serve 'em right for making it too damn hard then.

What if it's one of those 'how didn't I see that' ones where people kick themselves when they see the answer. Just to muddy the waters further.
One day I aspire to having a signature.

then the poster better start giving clues out if the time draweth near.
For example, I based my one yesterday (abdicate) on the anniversary of Ed VIII abdication - so I could have give a clue to avoid punishment.
Don't worry - my next one is a doozy!

For the record, what I originally thought was:
Most perfect
one of five QUIN (as in Quins, five children in teh same pregnancy)
char T (as in "a cup of char", tea)
is the crucial element! ESSENCE (as in the dictionary definition: http://www.thefreedictionary.com/essence)

Being somewhat antipodean, fitting in with your times may be difficult, so i reserve the right to post early (during Monday work hours my time) giving you Poms, Yanks and other Johnny foreigners longer to unravel my devious clues... The finish time can still be 13:00 UTC

A game I play, the action RPG Path of Exile is ramping up for a major content update in a bit less than a day. Lots of I'm Bored silliness is going on while everyone waits for a detailed listing of all the changes; some much better than others. This is epic:
Twas The Night Before Patch Notes[^]
(More than a few inside jokes; but I think it stands well on its own.)
Did you ever see history portrayed as an old man with a wise brow and pulseless heart, waging all things in the balance of reason?
Is not rather the genius of history like an eternal, imploring maiden, full of fire, with a burning heart and flaming soul, humanly warm and humanly beautiful?

I played Path of Exile when it was released.
Apart from the huge massive skill tree; it was a arduous game to play (IMO)
I'd rather be phishing!
