This appeared in the Times, if memory serves, just before Christmas 95 (and probably many times since then!). I remember the date because it was my last Christmas at Science Systems and our team leader used to read Times clues out loud.
The answer, of course, is Noel!

I genuinely came up with this independently, and I wasn't reading the Times in '95!
Although I think the 'no L' is in a joke somewhere(though I can't recall how it goes), and that might have been in the back of my mind.
Glad that I came up with something that the Times did, even if I was 20 years late.
