So I just got this email from our IT department:Due to a recently published vulnerability, IT is in the process of disabling older versions of SSL on our employee and customer facing sites. This is necessary in order to continue providing secure access to our applications. Other major sites and service providers are in the process of making the same change.
This will not impact any modern browser. However, users of Internet Explorer 6 may be unable to connect to our sites after this is implemented. Internet Explorer 6 has been unsupported by Microsoft since April 2014, and the recommended path is to either upgrade to a later version or to switch to a different browser.
Since Internet Explorer 6 accounts for less than 0.1% of our traffic, we believe this should impact a minimal number of people. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Help Desk. Ah, SSL exploits, the final death of IE6.
Yay!

I still don't believe people use IE6. Only if they knew how hard it is to make the website compatible with IE, they would never ever use IE6 even if Microsoft would pay them $1 for each usage.

If they paid me that much i would definitely use it. I would even use older browsers on a dedicated machine at that rate.
Now how many uses can I do per hour? How about if I were to automate it? 50? 60?
I do not write it, so I really do not care how hard it is to write. Just pay me already.

I feel that IE6 has been post-mortem for a while, if anyone uses it it's like a zombie browser to me (kill it with fire and all that)
On a serious note, good to see that people are finally moving on from it.

Glad to see the back of it.
What we should do now is organise an IE4 revival.
It was by far the best of the IE line, with loads of new actually useful features (remember seeing the Quick Launch bar turn up, after you'd installed it?), and was way ahead of any competition.
Working from the basis of It Was Not Broken, everything that's been changed in or added to browsers since then was obviously completely unnecessary, so we don't need it now, either, and can happily revert to better days.

Johnny came to work on Monday with both of his eyes blackened. When asked how that happened, he said he got them in church on Sunday, so of course an explanation was needed.
Well, Johnny said, we stood up to sing and the lady in front of me had her dress stuck up her butt crack, so I pulled it out and she hit me and gave me a black eye.
OK, asked his friend, what about the other black eye?
Well, explained Johnny, the next song when we stood up, her dress wasn't stuck up her butt, so I pushed it up, since I knew she liked it that way.
I have my coat. Could someone point me towards the door, since my eyes are swollen shut?

Hi Guys,
I am looking for an alternate to MS Office for home laptop (which I am using for part-time freelance work, not on office but programming related). Buying MS Office is costly and can't afford at least at this moment. I need word and excel only.
I saw few alternates like Apache OpenOffice, LibreOffice, KingSoft Office etc. I know free ones may not be as best as MS Office but which would be closest? Anyone has first-hand experience to guide which one is more like MS office?
Thanks,
Milind

I've used OpenOffice and it does OK for my personal stuff. On the other hand, Office 365 is only $99/year and if your freelance work won't cover $99/year in expenses, I think I'd call it a hobby, not work.

Thanks for the reply. OpenOffice seems promising one. Freelance work is s/w related not ms- office related, sorry for the confusion in original post specified that in the post now.
Thanks,
Milind

I would go for LibreOffice instead. It's a fork of OpenOffice since Oracle screwed the OpenOffice pooch.
Also, look into Office365 from Microsoft. It's online and I believe there's a free version. Also, for simple documents, Google docs is pretty good. And the Google's spreadsheet is actually fairly rich.

Libre Office. Open office was 'bought' by Oracle via Sun; last time I looked at it, it was obsolete and virtually unmaintained, although it went to Apache Foundation in 2011 and they may be maintaining it more actively.
When Oracle took over, the developers promptly left (so that all they had was a collection of unmaintained and obsoleting code), and started LibreOffice.
Not being sure, I would compare Libre and Open. I use Libre on my personal boxes, it handles practically any MS file type, including 2010 Docx made with Templates, although there are some macro compatibility issues at deeper levels with Excel. This means that if your xls projects are complex, some parts won't automate in Libre.
I would recommend it; I last looked at oo in 2012 and it was pretty poor, although as I said, Apache now has it.
