I feel for your daughter, I rememeber when our dog died when I was a about 12, it took me months to stop randomly greetin'. Can still easily bring me to tears just be thinking about it.
This is one of the concerns I have about getting a dog going through that pain with my two kids.

I am dreading that day as well. I have a 13 year old that shows signs of slowing down.

It is so hard to say goodbye to a pet. My last dog was nearly 22 when he passed away and it was a very hard time.

I know that feeling, also lost my dog 2 years ago.
Had him since i was 6, but it was one of the sadest days in my life.
He was 14 and died in my arms while we were driving to the doc to get him put to sleep, was a heavy hearted decision but it was because he was only lying around the last days and wasn't even able to walk more than 5 meters
Hold him in good memory , he can't be replaced but it's easier if you get a new one. Helped me a lot.

My condolences Rage. I've lost 3 now and I have a 15 year old Lab/Golden x who is having trouble with her legs and has a very slow (spindle cell) growing tumour that is impossible to excise. It never gets easier.
Take care and give your daughter a big hug from me. They're surprisingly resilient at that age. You'll find one of the hardest things is when she suddenly mentions him out of the blue in the coming months.

Sucks... I remember that feeling. Losing my first dog was the last time I cried... Think I was about 14 or 15 at the time.
But... Eventually you'll move on, and get another dog... 10+ years of that kind of friendship is more than worth some pain at the end.

Very sad to hear that -- it really is amazing how we can develop such strong emotional bonds to our pets. Maybe it'll help your daughter if you talk about fun or antic things that your dog did.

Sorry to hear, they are indeed, an integral part of the family. We had our first dog for 17 years I wept like a baby when she passed. Just try to think of the joy he brought to your family.

My condolences. I lost my last dog about 20 months ago, the other dog five years before that and I am still not over the loss of either of them. My wife still cries if a mention of them comes up and it's hard not to join in. We have discussed getting another puppy but keep putting it off - we daren't even go to the shelter to look for fear of coming home with a new dog we can't cope with - my wife is disabled now and in a wheelchair, and probably couldn't manage a young dog.
- I would love to change the world, but they won’t give me the source code.

Sad news, hopefully you feel happier soon.
Unfortunately if you get a pet, it will die at some point before you do (unless you get a giant tortoise or something, I suppose). The period of pain at the end is worth it for the years of happiness, though.

Don't know about where you are, but Autumn (fall!) has arrived with a bang today.
It is absolutely wild outside, heavy rain and gale force winds. Up the Cairngorm mountains today they had gusts over 115mph (sustained 100mph).
I dropped the little one off at school and came home, set up my nest in a couple of bean bags, pulled a blanket over, put the telly on and fell asleep until the postie rang the door bell The wife is picking her up after school, so I have no intention of going outside again today.
Due back offshore on Wednesday and todays flights are already cancelled, the forecast is due to get worse for the next 24 hours, so suspect tomorrows flights might be cancelled as well. Delays on the horizon perhaps...
