We received a small package in the mail today.
It is about the size of a pack of cigarettes, only 1/2 as thick.
When you open the package and flip open a lid a 1.5 inch touch screen invites you to start a video.
If you touch the screen a video advertisement plays.
A tiny speaker plays sound.
It has a USB connector on the side.
This is an unsolicited advertisement received via the US postage service.
I wonder how much that cost.

What was the ad for? And what identifying logos/names/etc were on the video device?

Serious? Electronics can be so cheap. Years ago the flip phones that sold for over $100 cost $7 to make. This probably cost $5.

5 - 10 Dollars, no more. Two years ago I got an advertising prospect from IBM with a small screen and video player integrated into the cardboard cover. Of course I took it apart and found the company that makes them. I can't remember their name, but I think this is really wasteful. Advertising material is printed by many thousands, each copy costing only a cent or less. Even if it costs only 5$, this is sinfully expensive and usually used to impress managers. To anybody with a brain this should have the opposite result.

Yes and no. They don't use any standard interfaces and also special software to upload the video into the correct memory space, probably Flash RAM. Once you figure out the right pins on the circuit board and guessed the (probably serial) protocol, you could examine the memory content and eventually upload your own video.

Googled it for you, apparently more common that I thought. If you buy in quantity they can be bought fairly inexpensively. I assume they can be uploaded with whatever content you want.

When I look at the site I see starting prices around $5 USD, not "less than a penny".
According to my calculations, I should be able to retire about 5 years after I die.

I think that was caused by (most likely) an input error, or some kind of maths error (I have seen MS Access perform a calculation on a Telephone field! Granted, it was Access 2007, and the bug was fixed quickly, but still...)

I hope this get banned ... Seriously, a LCD screen for a one-shot usage ? As if we weren't already polluting enough with all these unnecessary electronics devices (s. thread yesterday about smartphones) built every day.

And what about what to do with such a thing afterwards? You cannot just "throw" it out because of electronics, has to go to electronic recycling depot (at least here in Canada we do...)
