If you can get VS2008 - it runs a lot faster than VS2010. On a netbook, VS2008 starts in 5 seconds, VS2010 takes about 2 minutes. You could always use mono instead of C#. It is more or less the same thing.

Well, I want latest MVC and ALL, hence 2013 is required. That too, until I get new machine...so thought of asking, if there is any temporary way out.

Get a new machine, upgrade the OS to Win7 (it'll probably come with Win8) and go with VS2013 then.

Why 2013? You have there something you can't be without?! Run some older (2010/2008) version - XP will go with it happily...

I don't mean to be a sourpuss, but you're not solving the problem, just prolonging the pain.
Scrap XP and get a new computer! If you are a professional programmer you should have your tools up to date. You don't see modern doctors going around treating patients with leaches anymore either, do you?

I believe Leeches are still used in some surgery's where blood clots could be harmful, will Wiki it....

Actually you do see modern doctors using leeches these days.
They have found that the anesthesizing characteristics of the leech's mouth can help in some specific instances.

So maybe there is a case for doing this work on an XP machine for this particular developer!

SharpDevelop 4 will run on a 7 year old XP machine (it's what I've got it installed on). I'm not sure if it lets you build and test web apps as easily as VS, but it should certainly be possible, as in the end they're just .Net assemblies and all the libraries you need are in the Framework.

1) Go rent a Virtual Private server with Windows Server 2008 onwards. make sure the data centre is a local to you as possible.
2) Remote Desktop
3) Install software as needed.
4) Regret paying for remote server
5) buy new computer
6) Repeat step 3 on new computer... painful.
